Woo Hoo! There WILL be a FireStore for HVX-200 - FireWire to hard drive solution, no P2 needed
PRESS RELEASE FOCUS Enhancements and Panasonic Partner to Expand FireStore to DVCPRO HD Format
John Baisley, president of Panasonic Broadcast of U.S. 'We have selected the FOCUS FireStore Direct To Edit solution as a way of offering economical long-duration DVCPRO, DVCPRO 50, or DVCPRO HD recording to the event production market. The FireStore solution, like our P2 Card Solid-State Memory solution, speeds up the production workflow by eliminating time wasted digitizing footage."
Expected price around $2000.
Mike's Comments: Hot damn! This will provide a bulk capture solution for field usage that does NOT require a stack of P2 cards, but will cost about what a P2 card does - around $2K. How does this help? The P2 cards are about $2000 for 8GB, which, at 1080p24, is something like 10-12 minutes. The FireStore is likely to be in the 40-80 GB capacity for the same price. You see the benefit.
The base HVX-200 with the new FireStore device will probably be the ideal shooting solution, presuming the FireStore presents no limitations to frame size/rates that the camera otherwise supports.
And apologies for all of this "it works, it doesn't, it works, it doesn't" type stuff - I'm just feeding the info to you folks as fast as I get it.

Comments:
Mike, c'mon man it works, it doesn't, it works, it doesn't.
Oh. Never mind.
;-)
On a more serious note, this is great news. P2 is a fantastic technology, but a 60GB Firestore is going to make the Panny cams a lot more affordable for users, event videographers in particular. Thanks for the link!

As an independent filmmaker, the news about the 100mbs firestore strikes me as wonderful. I have long pined for an affordable 4:2:2 and 16:9 camera solution, much less something with HD resolution. Going tapeless is also a liberating proposition. My biggest question about all these HDV/DVCProHD cameras is exposure lattitude. Any news about the lattitude for this camera or its HDV cousins? I've heard for the DVX-100A family it's about 5 stops (two over, three under), but I've never tested it or anything...
Anonymous - yeah, I think it is great info as well. As for exposure lattitude, well, look at it this way. It is STILL a 1/3" CCD for HD as the 1/3" chips were for SD. I'd like at least 1/2", but it isn't happening. With twice (or more) pixels on the same size, each pixel is getting less light than the SD 1/3" chips, so I don't think that bodes terribly well for the exposure lattitude. Graeme Nattress has had much intelligent commentary on this topic. Search the comments, or check out his site (Google his name).
