Hell Yeah - Quad G5 is here!

It's a happy, happy site on my porch - a picture is worth a 1000 words (see left).

Quad G5 is here, with 7800 GT and fiber channel card installed, BlackMagic Multibridge Extreme is here, but the hosers at RAM vendor Crucial.com emailed yesterday to inform me to the effect of "Oh-so-sorry, that item we said was in stock? It's not, gonna be about a week. Yeah, we know we said we had it, and that it should be there tomorrow, but it won't." That, in my professional opinion, ranks in business terms as "for poop."

So the Super Friends are all assembled, but somebody left the keys to the Invisible Jet. So with the paltry stock 512MB of RAM (Hey, I'M sure not paying Apple's RAM markups), I can't install Final Cut Studio, or probably not Final Touch HD either.

In any case, I'm going to be out of town early next week, so it'll be Wednesday or Thursday before I can get back to it. The dogs will just have to be the only ones to enjoy it's silvery awesomeness. Hope they don't lean on it and knock it over, sucka is HEAVY.

So, this post has virtually no real information in it - too bad for all of us. I'll do an OOBE (out of box experience) writeup later when I can, gotta go scoot and decorate the Christmas tree.

PS-Crucial has GENERALLY been a good supplier, except when it comes to new machines, they tend to get their parts either wrong or difficult availability in my experience to date. They sent me the wrong RAM twice in a row for some new Mac I had in thelast year or so (can't remember is dual 2.5 G5 or for 12" PowerBook). But once they DO send the right stuff, I have yet to get a bad stick from them (or have one fail). Come on guys, get it in stock and KNOW when it is and isn't in stock! Vendor bait'n switch ("Why YES we have that! Order it now!" followed by "It'll be here aaaaaany day now - don't cancel your order!") is an old and VERRRRRRRRRY frustrating game - this is the first time they've played it with me.
Comments:
Go with Ramjet. Never had a problem with them. MemoryToGo is good, too. Ordered my 500 Gig Hitachi Drive for the quad from them. On time...good service. They actually did call me and tell me they had no Hitachi's and would send me the Seagate and charge $10 less. Well, they must've gotten it in that day because when it arrived, it was a Hitachi. Nice...

I too received my G5 Quad with the 7800 today. (Friday) I'm also in need of memory, but I haven't even tried to order any, because I wasn't expecting the machine until January. (According to Apple's website)

Just a few days before I got the email notice for the shipment, I had written Apple why they didn't do what they had done before and just ship the machines with the lesser video cards, and then ship the new cards when it was ready. Why did their estimate suddenly change and cut the ship date by a whole month? (I doubt that my letter had much to do with it though.)

I'm playing with the new machine now... It's much quieter than my 1st generation G5 Dual 2Ghz. It just dims all the lights when you turn it on!

Anyone want to buy a G5 Dual 2Ghz with 2GB memory?

My supplier since the 1980s has been THE CHIP MERCHANT out of San Diego. They have great prices, a lifetime warranty and a special Mac section and the experience and motivation to go with it.

Damn Scott, wish you'd posted this a couple days ago. I literally _just_ ordered a dual core G5.

Oddly enough, I tried getting 2Gb of RAM from Crucial as well. Received a message that the memory was out of stock, and that I had to check back. Couldn't believe they didn't have an option that would notify me of when the RAM was in stock! So, for the first time in a couple years, I shopped eslewhere for the RAM and ended up getting an even better deal on higher quality RAM via monarchcomputing.com

I just installed two 1Gb GeIL brand DDR2-533 (PC2-4300) DIMMs into my new Quad G5. It seems to be running fine. I picked the memory for it's lower latency (CL=3-3-3-8)

They were $92.00 a DIMM from zipzoomfly.com. They come with a heat-spreader that's painted bright orange. Of course, that's good right? It's a complementary color to the blue motherboard!

The memory I'm told, will only result in a very small increase in speed of perhaps 1%. I still need to do some tests.

Also... the same vendor had the exact 250GB Western Digital hard drive that the Quad G5 came with. I'll soon have a two drive internal raid and continue to boot from the FW800 drive, like I've been doing.

hi mike , i'm nicolas from paris (france)
i would like to know if you think the quad is a good investment for this year 2006 ? i'm actualy on pc with avid xpress pro (with dvcam device, i have a good friand who buy a Z1 sony and i would like to buy a hvx200 this year ... my question is about the mactel ... what do you think about ? i need to wait ? or not ? so i have 2405 dell x 2 ... does this screen is good now for your quad ssytem ? about the multibridge extreme : the multibridge accelerate the hdv formet and the dvcpro hd ? the apple software (fcp, motion, shake ...) are optimized for quad system ? and the final question is : how much time the powerpc quad VS the mactel ...?
