Rosetta Compatibility: PowerPC Applications on Intel Macs
Rosetta Compatibility: PowerPC Applications on Intel Macs
For those looking to make the jump early to Intel based Macs, bookmark this link - it is the Rosetta (G3/G4/G5 emulation for Intel based Macs) compatibility test list - and it tells us whether the software runs, doesn't run, or sorta runs.
A VERY useful resource considering that it may take a year or more for some of our crucial production apps to get Intel native (like, say EVERYTHING Adobe makes).
Some useful tidbits right off the top (yes=runs under Rosetta, no means doesn't run at all):
Adobe Creative Suite - yes it runs, but with a speed hit
Apple's DVD Studio Pro, FCP, FCE, Motion, Soundtrack Pro - NO - won't run at all
Macromedia Dreamweaver/Fireworks/Flash 8 - YES
MS Office 2004: yes
Elgato's EyeTV - no

Comments:
No offense intended, but FCP, Soundtrack Pro, DVDSP, Aperture and Cinema Tools all work on my intel based iMac. Motion however does not, it simply tries to start and then dies once the GUI pops up.
None of those apps perform very well obviously as they're running in Rosetta, but they DO work. All that being said, some features may not work, but I've beat the piss out of FCP and it works, just slowly.
ciao,
harlan

I would venture that those results have been culled from the people running OS X on non-Mac intel boxes. So take it all with a grain of salt.
Harlan, you might want to check video card compatibility for Motion & iMac.
**I was the guy who said FCP runs, albeit slowly, on intel.

It is also incorrect that Final Cut Express HD will not run on Intel iMac. With a change of display type listed in info.plist (application contents file) to ATI it will run fine.
Motion does not run on my Macbook Pro either. And MORE IMPORTANTLY niether does After Effects. I have not found any other Mac user who's tried to run it but all my efforts have failed. AE and Motion do the same thing, they fail to open at the last second.
