Sony HDR-FX1 HDV Digital Camcorder for $2,000

Sony HDR-FX1 HDV Digital Camcorder for $2,000 - dealmac.com

While the FX1 isn't my first pick (I'd MUCH rather see folks get the Z1U), this price is so good I had to share it. The $1995 price is $820 less than the best other price dealmac has seen. Hmm....something new coming out at NAB perhaps, and they're trying to clear inventory? Regardless, it's a helluva price, go git you one if you were thinking of an A1U or HC3.

Thanks to Paul of RoboGeek.com for sending that one in!

It's gone.

Another thing that should be worth looking into is how there are suddenly NO Sony products for sale on their site anymore.

Angry FX1 customers pushed the Apple Store's resellerrating (www.resellerrating.com) down to 6.32 after this debacle.

Many even called to verify that the price was no mistake, ordered it, and then had their orders cancelled without comment.

if it sounds too good to be true, it usually is.

"if it sounds too good to be true, it usually is"
Yeah, my receipt for the order, all the email confirmations of my order, shipping dates verified, all that stuff, I should have known better, I should have known none of it was real.
Give me a break.
No, wait, give me my camera!

Apple Fool's Day?

There's a lot of backlash on the various video forums regarding this whole debacle. One post said that lower-level Apple Store personnel saw they had a bunch of the FX1's in stock and tried to move them at that price. Once upper level mgmt got wind, they started cancelling orders. That's the story anyway...

Regardless, it's not a good thing for PR no matter how you slice it. Apple's policy may state that they are not responsible for pricing errors on the site, BUT numerous folks called in to verify the legitimacy of the price before ordering. Uncool.

On a different note, I personally don't think the FX line will be updated any time soon. I don't see an FX2 on the horizon...

i dunno... while it's not a pleasant thing for those involved, errors do happen sometimes.

why would apple sell you a camera for 2000 bucks if they would easily be able to sell it for 2500 and still have a burner? it's not that they like giving away money.

it's understandable that people are disappointed, but if you think about it, you haven't lost anything, have you? they probably should have appologized though, and offered a unit at 2500 to those who got a confirmation mail.

The fact remains, Apple listed the FX1 at the Apple Store for $1995 and multiple Apple Store customer service reps verified that as a legit price to multiple (understandably dubious) callers. If you personally call the company and they verify to you that the item is a certain price, then it should be that quoted price.
I'm not one of the FX1 "buyers", I'm not personally bitter and I've no axe to grind here. But it still smacks of bait and switch to me. I've read one poster who called after his cancellation, and Apple is now saying they never even carried that item. WTF gives?

And it's very well possible that a few people have lost something. I know a few guys that were already making arrangements to sell their PD-170's and VX-2100's since "they were buying two FX1s". Perhaps they jumped the gun a little on selling items, but who can blame them? If you can't purchase confidently from someone with a proven track record like the Apple Store, then there's no value in buying from a proven brand name then, is there?

I ordered the camera, got my confirmation email, spoke to a rep that day who informed me that the deal was legit and that it would ship May 1st at the earliest but possibly not till the end of may. I have still not recieved an email canceling my order or telling me the offer was a mistake. I am now scared to even call in and inquire further. My card has been charged and they have the money. Anybody that ordered it have any advice relative to this situation. Moreover, any amo to use on them when I do call.

FresHDV - "bait and switch" implies that Apple intended to deceive for the purpose of selling a lower quality item or the same item at a higher price. Neither is the case - they realized the error and cancelled the orders. Their reputation has suffered as a result - there is no upside for Apple here.

Anonymous, there's been at least one report of someone trying to buy the FX1 for $2K and having the Apple rep try to talk them into getting a GL2 for $2700 instead, after providing no information as to why the original FX1 order was cancelled. That sounds like bait and switch, at least as far as that one rep is concerned (I'd have to see a lot more reports like this one to conclude that Apple had something up their corporate sleeve).

I ordered this camera as well, though it was 2 days before it was posted on the deal sites. I recieved both cameras I ordered. I am guessing they had limited stock and they sold more cameras then they had.. J
