Announcing the Texas HD Shootout

Remember that big HD camera test I was going to do? It's happening, starting today. Over the weekend, we'll be doing a ton of testing with the following cameras:

Sony Z1U
Panasonic HVX200
JVC GY-HD100U
Canon XL H1
Sony F350 (the new XDCAM HD, the nicer of the two)
Panasonic Varicam

Adam Wilt of DV Magazine and Chris Hurd of DVInfo.net are my co-conspirators - they'd already planned this shoot so I'm jumping in with them. We'll be capturing a lot of footage uncompressed to disk as well, so should be quite interesting and exciting.

And Omega Broadcast Group is going to graciously let us shoot in their space and raid all of their parts bins - we'll be using their Z1U, their HVX200, and their Varicam, as well as lighting gear and who knows what all else.

Here's Chris' Announcement from DVInfo.net:

Announcing the Texas HD Shootout -

Starting today, powerful forces are converging on Austin, Texas for a four-day round up of all the major HD camcorders you guys like to discuss so much around here.

Adam Wilt of DV Magazine, Mike Curtis of the popular 'HD For Indies' mega-blog, and elements of the DV Info Net team will convene in a series of studio and location camera tests in a variety of different situations. Everything will be recorded, of course, and the plan is to offer feedback to interested parties through Adam's articles for DV Magazine, Mike's online journal at HD For Indies, and right here on our message boards at DV Info Net.

The camera line-up includes the Panasonic AG-HVX200 DVCPRO HD P2 camcorder, the Canon XL H1, JVC GY-HD100 'A' with 16x and 13x lenses, and Sony HVR-Z1U HDV camcorders, and the Sony PDW-F350 XDCAM HD camcorder. Plus we'll also have a Panasonic AJ-HDC27 'H' VariCam DVCPRO HD camcorder for reference.

Adam is our technical lead and will be directing with Nate Weaver assisting. Mike is co-directing and managing a truckload of uncompressed capture stations, and DV Info Net regulars Boyd Ostroff, Greg Boston, Pete Bauer and Mike Devlin are lending a hand with all of the cameras and other production requirements. There are a lot of other folks involved who are helping out in several capacities. I can't wait to tell you more about them. We'll keep you guys advised on how this is going day by day.

Meanwhile, although I can't promise this will happen, I'd like to encourage any Austin area members who might be up for dinner and drinks on Friday or Saturday night to please shoot me a private email. Our crew is already talking about going long, so a public get-together might not actually happen, but let me know at least if you're interested and if we can pull it off then we'll manage that by email. Hopefully we can get some Shiner Bock flowing.

Updates follow as this thing progresses -- and be sure to also watch for Mike's entries over at his site, http://www.hdforindies.com."

Comments:
Be sure to do some low-key lighting tests. Did a shoot over the weekend with the HVX and while I was very pleased with the camera overall, I was suprised at the amount of noise in scenes with lots of blacks. Be curious to see how some of the other cameras hold up in similar situations.

How about a full auto test wlaking from screaming outside sun into dark building, or even a pan from bright sun into a deep shade....

either way - thanks for the effort... cant wait!

That's exciting! Congratulations!

Glad to see Barry "bullshit" Green isn't involved.....

Wouldn't it had been more productive to have waited two weeks and do this test on the newly-released models shown at NAB?

Cameras announced at NAB normally take at least a few months before they become reality.

Little birdie told me Sony may have a BIG surprise at NAB, 4K camera

I heard Sony was going to have a mock-up of the Z1 replacement. A compact camera using mini XDCAM HD disc. Recording 28 minutes of 35Mb HDV. Uses same CCD as in the Canon H1.

You heard it here first.

Guy, a Sony Z1 replacemnet that did that would have me excited! Give it interchangeable lense and the same price tag and I'll get 'sony' tatooed on my arm

Back to the real world -
Can't wait for your results from the test Mike - sounds awesome - I'll be loging in daily salivating for the latest.

enjoy

Wow. Some of the harshness in a couple of the above comments seems misplaced in this page. Its obvious that there are emotions at stake in the low budget HD world.

Mike, please continue with your test. It would be a very valuable asset. Some of the tests mentioned above did not account for compression on the tape, so please continue. You are doing something very worthwhile.

-Christopher Johnson

Yeah, but any test without Barry Green is likely to provide consumers with a pretty good idea where the HVX stands in reality.

Is the HVX 200 a HD camera? That should be high on the agenda.

Anonymous asking about NAB - cameras get announced for the most part at NAB, not released.

...and to the Anonymous poster who was so negative about it all - why are you posting if you think it is worthless? If you are constructive, or at least critical without flaming, your posts won't be deleted.

Thanks to all supporters, much appreciated.

Why this test? I haven't played with these cameras, or seen them SIDE BY SIDE SHOOTING THE SAME THING, and haven't seen the difference between tape and uncompressed to disk. That's why I'm taking part. Plus other reasons you'll hear about soon enough.

I'll post shortly....

Exactly Mike.

I am looking forward to your tests. Same cameras perhaps coming at the tests from a different angle certainly helps add to the mix.

Low-light performance is of great interest to me. The last shootout showed the HVX as more sensitive than the Z1. However I am told the Z1's gain is "free" thus actually making the camera superior in low light. Could you see if this is the case please.

Your efforts on this blog are well appreciated. I don't know how you find the time. :-)
Cheers
