Apple Ships Final Cut Studio 5.1 - more info

UPDATE -

Some folks are wondering whether to update now or wait for an NAB update.

Here's my read on it:

1.) Apple is offering an update to FCP just a few weeks before NAB. Clearly, they want this out, done, and away before they announce whatever they are going to announce at NAB....otherwise they'd just announce or ship at NAB.

2.) Somebody asked in the comments about fear of updating now out of concern for paying another update for v6 (or v5.5 or whatever next). Without any prior knowledge, but just from a business sense perspective, v5.1 is the update for Intel Macs, some new camera (XL H1) support, and some overdue bug fixes. Version Next will offer new features above and beyond these things, and I have no doubt, after buying software for 15 years, that it'll be it's own "full sized" upgrade price, probably no less than $200, but probably no more than $500. Historically, $299 is where I'd peg it.

3.) Because they are shipping v5.1 NOW, my guess is that they'll announce the next version, but it might not ship at the show. Remember how v5 took until May or June? Remember how Motion 1.0 took until October? v5.1 is the holdover until v6 ships - otherwise they would have waited three more weeks and shipped v5.5 or v6 with Intel support at NAB. Because they DID ship v5.1 now, that TELLS ME that the next version is less likely to ship at NAB or immediately thereafter. And that's OK - because v5.1 will work on iMacs and MacBook Pros for now.

End update.

Apple Ships Final Cut Studio 5.1

On laptops, the Intel MacBook Pro is up to 2.5x faster than the 1.67 GHz G4 based laptops according to Apple.

There are also some VERY SIGNIFICANT improvements to FCP above and beyond Intel compatibility, such as some vital Media Manager fixes, support for the Canon XL H1 (which FCP 5.0.4 does NOT recognize), and a bunch of other stuff I'll write about later tonight.

Salient quote from the page:

*DV and HDV rendering from the Timeline is up to twice as fast on a MacBook Pro with 2.16 GHz Intel Core Duo than a 15-inch PowerBook® G4 with 1.67 GHz PowerPC. MPEG-2 encoding from DV and HDV for DVD authoring is up to 2.5x as fast on a MacBook Pro with 2.16 GHz Intel Core Duo than a 15-inch PowerBook G4 with 1.67 GHz PowerPC.

Comments:
Arguably one of the most important aspects of the update is that 5.1 project files will not open in previous versions of FCP: FCP Late Breaking News (p. 6)

Mike,

You are mistaken about 5.0.4 NOT recogngizing the XL-H1. With the HDV setups, you can control and capture footage as long as it was shot 60i. 24F footage would skip in the window and simply be an unusable capture.

If this version actually supports 24F capture and extraction. (24P editing of it) then it truly is supporting the camera. So far, I've heard nothing about this specifically, and I am leery to upgrade to it (as an H1 owner) because if it's true that my 5.1 projects won't open in 6.0, I"ll just have to sit tight. Until true 24F to 24P support happens, I'll just stick to capturing SDI into the Kona LH with PhotoJPEG or DVCPRO HD. Quality is still great, but a lot easier to deal with than HDV format overall. I control the camera through a RS422 to Control L adapter, and capture audio analog in. I've also figured out how to inverse telecine 24F material with Cinema Tools. All this works well but it's a bunch of extra steps that shouldn't be necessary.

Meanwhile, FCP supports the much newer HVX all the way. Lame. Little bit of back scratching from both parties, I suspect.

Does FCP support HVX200E all the way? Even with 720p25 and 720p50?

I'm debating whether or not to send in my apps for updating. On the one hand, I'd like to get the update while it's (relatively) cheap and accepts Academic versions (I've got FCP4.5), and Apple specifically says in the Terms and Conditions that they reserve the right to revoke the upgrade at any point. On the other hand, Apple might announce a new version at NAB, in which case they might stick me again for an upgrade fee.

I am hoping they will release the 5.5 update at NAB and it will be free just like 4.5 was. I don't think they would go to all of this trouble to get UB's out, make people pay for them and then charge again, it will piss everybody off just like when aperture UB was announced. Just my two cents.

Anonymous - I seriously doubt that will happen - the low cost upgrade now "satisfies" the UB market. V6 is a different animal, a "full" upgrade, so it'll cost what it costs. It is BECAUSE they just did the $50 upgrade (and let's face it, that is CHEAP!) that they'll be in a position to charge full-on for the next round. Anything else is just wishful thinking.

Why is 5.1 not a free upgrade for those of us running 5.0.4 on PPC?
When has apple ever charged for incremental update to FCP?

Kind of dissapointing to me...but I can't wait for 6!

Dustin - yeah, I would've liked for that to be a freebie, but then again it isn't just the 5.0.4 to 5.1 - that also covers the cost of the port and optimization to Intel. $50 ain't bad.

It does seem like a bit of a rip off for us PPC Final Cut Pro users who are the majority of users, especially those of us who have been clammoring for a fixed Media Manager for ages (hurray), which has caused me to order my crossgrade.

Mike-

It's okay bc I just picked up a Macbook Pro 2ghz today! So I need to get the universal binary anyway...

Here you can find how to force FCP to edit 720p50:
