Red Digital Cinema Camera wins award at NAB 2006

I tried to blog this one from the show floor, but I couldn't get online. But this morning, a package was dropped off at the Red booth, and opening it up, Ted discovers that Red won a major award at the show - the AIM Award for Innovation In Media for Content Creation (or similar verbiage to that effect).

Score one for Red! Ted told a hilarious story at dinner about how he stole the RED t-shirt off Mark's back zipped over late to receive the award at some big industry luncheon - so it was a row of grey suits, then Ted and JoAnne Yu (who is of course, whip sharp as well as gorgeous) in bright red RED t-shirts. So the photographers were all madly snapping away at their most blatantly obvious metaphor they were going to be presented with all week - a row of bland, grey, same as always Guys In Suits, who just lost out to a guy in a bright red t-shirt with the hot babe standing next to him.

It'll be interesting to see the NAB daily newspaper tomorrow, I'll bet a shot just like that is in there somewhere.

Update - no pic unfortunately, but official coverage here.

Concerned, oh ya.

I am wondering about a couple of things related to the RED Camera. Historically products such as this are released and fall way behind in delivery, finally ship out what tends to be beta product which historically requires updates in firmware and software to truely be functional. Is followed by a rerelease which comes closer to all of the hype and promised deliverables...blah blah blah...

My question for Jim woud be: Given the five spectrums of constraints, which are the most critical to him and which does he and the company have the most flexiblilty with?

five constraint types generally fall into:
Features
People
Time
Money
Resources

I am as excited about Red as anyone -- however, face it , the product is 100% marketing and vaporware at this point, and it seems kind of silly for them to win an award for some mockups and a spec sheet, and literally nothing else. I sure hpe they do pull this thing off, but for people to put $1K down, for them to win an award, etc. -- come down to Earth, folks!

I'm pretty sure Oakley has a track record of delivering a variety of products...from glasses to apparel to various other bits. One of the links to Mr. Jannard's products from one of the other threads shows a B52 bomber seat, so it seems that they have manufacturing in place and visionary + end goal...this seems like a recipe for success to me.

It was also front page news in the hardcopy edition of the NAB2006 Daily News. I picked up one as I was leaving NAB on Wednesday afternoon. I walked down the hall reading it with a big smile. The real cool thing that the NAB News article pointed out, and I quote:

"When it comes to cutting-edge technological innovations, attendees at NAB 2006 know a good thing when they see it. After exploring the reaches of the show floor, NAB attendees cast their ballots and made their voices known about which products at NAB 2006 deserve to be honored with the annual NAB Awards for Innovation in Media (AIM), the only NAB awards solely decided by NAB attendees."

The point is that this was an award voted on by thousands of NAB attendees, a generally tech-savvy audience who were at NAB to check out the latest equipment. The people have spoken. The interest is definately huge. The reaction to RED was obviously quite favorable.

Won an award?!?! They haven't even RELEASED anything yet! Has this entire world gone completely mad?!

So all who are complaining/concerned/curious about Red winning an award with no working camera and not even test footage to show - this award was given based purely on the voting of NAB show attendees - it was up to them to pick their favorites. And enough people thought the product was interesting enough they voted for it. Some other winners were Apple's FCP and Adobe Production Studio/Suite, neither of which shipped an upgrade at NAB - so go figure.
