Reader claims FCP and FCE Projects Interchangable ...

UPDATE SUNDAY: the guy who originally wrote about this has posted a comment with his exact workflow to better document the process of what does and doesn't work. Click on the Comments link below this article to read it (then scroll down).

FCP and FCE Projects Interchangable ...

Well, I wouldn't have guessed this, but it makes a bit of sense, considering they are built from the same code base, but Apple hasn't said peep about it.

In this guy's testing, so far you can open Final Cut Pro 5.x files in Final Cut Express 3.5. I'd be curious to see what happens when you use fancier features that might not be supported in FCE, like plugins that don't exist in FCE, etc.

But the ability to open FCE projects in FCP is great - since then you might be able to migrate iMovie HD to FCE to FCP.

But again, I haven't tried it nor seen it done.

Anybody have all three and can test? Would love to find out.

Comments:
You've always been able to open FCE projects into FCP - that's been a stated feature since FCE was released (with the usual limitations of matching versions).

I know that an FCE project opened in FCP will show the timecode that was captured with a DV capture but is not available in FCE.

Didn't ever test going the other way and am pleasantly surprised that works.

Phillip - I noticed in the last round of updates of FCE they did NOT state FCP project importing. Also, I haven't seen it stated for this version, either.

I made the original post, let me add a couple of what could be pertinent details:

1. I was running FCS NFR. Since I never used things like Motion I decided to go with a fully paid-up version of FCE.

2. I'd previously installed RedGiant Magic Bullet 2.0 for editors with FCS.

3. I made a copy of the FCP plugins folder.

4. I used DesInstaller to read the FCS package reciepts and remove FCS components.

5. I installed FCE3.5

6. I copied the FCS plugins into the FCE plugins folder. Any that already existed (there were only two IIRC) I opted to keep whatever FCE had installed.

7. I opened a FCP timeline and LiveType originated project and was able to continue to work on them.

I note that both FCE and FCS have LiveType 2.1 version now, so I guess that's not surprising.

Since FCE now supports RT extreme/GPU it was a pleasant surprise that Magic Bullet still functioned, though I suppose it makes sense.

Anyway, I wouldn't recommend switching between apps on any major ongoing project cos you never know what might break.

I'm sure it doesn't make a difference, but I'm still on PowerPC.

Anyway, I found this FCS to FCE more of a curiousity rather than anything actually useful. If you have a fully paid-up version of FCS, I stay stick with it!

I'm in a picture, I'm in a picture!

OK, the back of my head is. But at least I know I don't have a bald spot yet. Thanks, Mike.

:-)
