Rumor Time: ThinkSecret predictions for Intel Based Xserve and tower Macs
Think Secret - Briefly: Intel-based Xserve due this summer: "
Apple's Xserve may find Intel processors inside of it ahead of any Power Mac upgrade, sources report. Intel is currently on track to deliver Woodcrest, the code-named successor to its Xeon processor targeted at servers, in June, and sources say Apple is eying the release of the first Intel-based Xserve around July.
....and based on Intel's known release date of Core 2 Duos (Conroe), chips due July, they speculate we'll see desktop G5 replacements at WWDC in August.
My thoughts? Maybe....but that's much faster than I'd guess. These guys guess madly and are usually wrong. They keep saying "It's about to happen!" and eventually they're right...like a clock, twice a day...

Comments:
Yeah, normally I'm bullish on those rumors, but here's why I think they're on this time:
1. Apple's made the transition to x86 way ahead of schedule, and it's been pretty successful so far.
2. Intel's chip availablility is much better than the PPC days - reducing one obstacle for Apple.
3. Apple has already shown a willingness to release products as soon as the processor was available - MacBook Pro and Mini machines.
4. While it must drive The Steve crazy, Intel's already moved up their release dates to keep up with AMD.
5. Many thought that the laptops would be last to be released, because of the relative complexity vs. workstations. The only obstacle (as far as we know) is workstation-class chips for servers and boxes - once they're available in quantity this Summer, I see no reason they wouldn't release x86 boxes.
6. Since Woodcrest (the server-oriented part) is released first, it's likely could update the Xserves first. Some have speculated that the workstations might use this part at first.
