It's never as easy as it looks: Brando in Superman Returns

Ain't It Cool News has a great QuickTime movie showing how they used the old footage of Brando from the Christopher Reeves Superman movie and remapped it in 3D to use it in the new Superman Returns movie. Very nice step by step process shows how each step was done, and problems found, solved, and progress made. Remember this the next time somebody says "Sure, yeah, we can fix that in post..."

PS - the adage at frogdesign (where I worked for a bit in the 90s) on set was whenever there was a problem, folks said "MFIP" - which was short for "Mike Fix In Post" as in Mike will fix it in post production. Since I was on salary, and clearly had no life to lead of my own, I did. Grr.
Comments:
Fix it in post you say?

How about Shake for $499???

Should make any fixing in post a lot less hard on the pocket.

WTF????

Guy, when did that happen? How did I miss this?

(2 minutes later, found the press release)

OK, that's gonna be a blog entry. But to quote Han Solo again, "Yeah kid, but could you fly it?" Even after using After Effects since it was CoSA 1.0, I STILL don't know how to use Shake. But I think I'm going to be finding out. Placing order shortly....

In any case, though, MFIP still takes a while regardless of tool used!
