Win Red Reservation # 97 - DVXUser.com content

Rules for Contest - DVXuser.com -- The online community for filmmaking

Jarred Land emailed me to say he's having a Red Contest - not to give away a camera (them's cheap, but not THAT cheap!), but he is giving away Red reservation #97 - you get the titanium R and $1000 off the camera and the 97th one off the line.

To win, enter your idea for a Red product on the appropriate forum page.

Good luck, and good ideas!

Thanks for sharing the news Mike!

I thought Jim or someone at RED said these were non-transferable and that if you want to refund he will but that means everyone just moves up in line and the spot dissappears. Could have sworn this was the case.

Jarred prolly cleared it with Red. He has been to the lab after all!

Yes we have a special arrangement with RED for this contest of course.

Eventhough I'm already a Red reserver (at a lower number than this I might add) - I went over to look at the contest and found that most of the ideas I'd already emailed or posted on other forums like cinematography.com and .net - were already written there. I absolutely think autofocus should be included - I described a whole system of also using digital markers in the viewfinder which would allow the cinematographer to watch the action and in his or her peripheral vision to make sure he is hitting his focus markst - this will be a big deal for 35 dof. I even suggested they amke a great dolly system since they seem to be strong with physical manufacturing - HOWEVER - the one thing I didn't think of and think is brilliant and should definitely win the contest is the idea of doing HDRI shots... I don't know if it's possible, but the idea that you could snap 5 or even 4... or even 3 images bracketed at the same time would be incredible - and would totally allow the possibility of increasing the relative dynamic range - ie. "filmlook." I hope that everyone gets over there and backs that idea. It would be unbelievable and if you can already handl 120 fps, at 24fps, you certain have the bandwidth. But the fact that it is in motion is an issue... but hopefully the engineers there will think about it seriously.

Mark - HDRI in camera is an interesting idea, but I don't think it would work - if you shot 5 to 1 (5 120fps exposures to make 1 24fps exposure) - unless your subject matter was incredibly still, it wouldn't work - think how far objects in frame move in 1/24th of a second - now divide that by 5 and put them togther. It'd be blurry/smeary. Imagine panning, or somebody walking across frame, etc.

If you want to see how this could work in practice, take some 60i footage and make it 12 fps with your same process. Now imagine 1/5th the "motion blur" - it still would be a mess.

Great idea, not technically possible at this time.

OOPS - correction- should read

"Now imagine twice the motion blur" instead of "Now imagine 1/5th the motion blur"

Typo/brain fluxor.
