KerrrrBLOOEY goes my MacBook!
UPDATED THURSDAY: See bottom
Ah, a rainbow of flavors...a colorful cascade that would have been an oh-so-trendy shirt a few years ago....instead, that is what I see on my MacBook's screen on bootup now.
My MacBook's performance hit a new low today - it spontaneously lost power (with a fully charged battery AND AC power connected) a couple of times, and I decided that was it and called Apple's tech support. After a five minute wait (not bad) I got connected to a woman who was helpful and proficient and didn't make me go through anything stupid like reinstalling the OS or anything. She had me deep zap PRAM (opt-cmd-p-r on boot 3 times in a row), and then I tried to run the hardware diagnostics (hold down D while booting with Disc 1 that came with the MacBook). Then I got something new -

(click for larger view, command - click to open in new tab)
....so that's not good. This was an accelerating failure - starting with last week when it would come into the studio in the morning and it was off, to the point where it would spontaneously power down every few hours or less. So the Apple rep put me on hold while she went off to get the return/repair process started, and the best irony of the week - the hold music cut immediately to the line of "You've lost that loving feeling and it's gone...gone...gone...wooOooOooo woah..." (Yeah - the Top Gun song - and maybe that's not a good choice for the hold music when people call in for support?) : )
In 20+ years of using Macs, I haven't seen a failure like this. I've seen snow crashes where the video card throws up garbage, but the eerily organic way these stripes fade up - (oh wait, you don't know that part, so watch the video.
Since I got one from Apple Retail on the SECOND DAY they were available, it is safe to say it is one of the early ones off the assembly line, and this is the price I pay for a 1.0 product, esp. a 1.0 product bought in the first few days - the odds of failure or problems are much higher. Only because I wanted to put out Teh Pfreshest Nooz did I go ahead and get one at that time. Or at least that's what I tell myself - truthfully, I was in the Must Have New Toy binge.
So I'm writing this on my old 12" PowerBook which I fortunately haven't sold yet. I'll keep ya'all posted on the saga...but blogging slows while I deal with all this...

UPDATE Thursday: Apple's shipping box arrived, a clever deal where I just pop out a couple of inserts to my size laptop fits in there. So within 24 hours Apple had picked up the laptop and it is on its way back to them. Well done Apple! I just hope it gets back before I go to LA in a couple of weeks (more on that soon).

Comments:
I bought a black MacBook 2 days after launch and less than a week later it completely stopped working. It wouldn't even turn on. I returned it the next day and decided to upgrade to a 15" MacBook Pro. No hassles from the Apple Store, except I'm still waiting for my refund for AppleCare on the MacBook.
For all you Rev A buyers, we salute you.
On the positive side Apple's laptop repairs usually are pretty quick. I had to mail my iBook in due to tripping over the cord and sending it flying off the couch once. A box arrived after one day, mailed it in and three days later got it back. Better than having it sit on some guy's repair bench for two weeks before he gets to it.

My Macbook did the same thing with the lines last night. Lots of folks on the discussions.info.apple.com boards have the same issue, traced to 10.4.7.
A pram reset fixed it for me...

Thank goodness I'm poor or else I might be experiencing these same problems. Looks like I have a couple months to save some dough before the newer, better rev. comes up!
I feel for you (and OK for me as I check your site several times a day and know you may not be able to blog as much this week now). Not to rub salt in your wound but I also go a MacBook (albeit a white one) on the first day and so far, knock on wood, no problemas. Actualy, it's my favorite Mac ever and the screen is brighter and lovelier than my Apple 20" LCD. It does get hot as hell and it does moo sometimes (but I live in NYC so it's rarely quiet enough that I can hear it without putting my ear up against it). So, despite some of these early model problems, I highly recommend it to everyone.
It's a good thing you put in your own harddrive, so you can swap it and replace the new on with this one, which will make the transfer of data oh so much easier.
I have one Apple Lemon, the Dual 800GHz G4 which had a bad motherboard and bad processors, I had that thing in all the time, and the problems always persisted until I got rid of it, and moved to a Dual 1.25 Ghz G4, which worked like a dream until I moved to my current G5. Don't even want a lemon again, what a pain, it got worse and worse and even after repairs was never right. That was just a bad machine.

Okay, this may be salt on the wound, but as an avid fan of your online wisdom, I can't help it. Instead of an I TOLD YOU SO, you get a YOU TOLD YOU SO!
From ur own blog May 16th: "Mike's Comments - so this is my next laptop (sorry, MiniMike that I'm writing this on, your days are numbered). I'm going to wait for the 1.0 kinks to get worked out, and get myself a black one..."
You think maybe you owe MiniMike another apology?

my blackbook has done the random power down thing before, but hasn't happened in a while. but i have had one weird thing happen, when i wake it up after having it go to sleep after using it with the mini-DVI to DVI adapter hooked up to my 1080i HDTV, it sometimes has a smaller resolution and when i switch to 1280x800, it keeps that small resolution, but centered on the screen, at 1280x800 resolution. very weird. a reset fixes it.
They call it "bleeding edge" for a reason.
I have more success lagging behind the curve by about 8-12 months and waiting for the kinks to be worked out.
In the PC world this is not the case, but that is because there is far more testing by third parties (with betas, etc) than apple does.
Unfortunately the "bleeding edge" folks are the betas...
I love apple. But I do lag by 8 months to stay in the sweet spot.

Good consulting call Mike, I went for the Powerbook G4 over a MBP as you suggested and looks like the wisdom held. BTW, for DVCPROHD, at least the 720p flavor, the G4 is fantastic, FCP works smooth, dissolves and CC no problem in realtime (with 2GB of RAM).
