Off Topic: Sunday in LA

Note - there's nothing film related in this, it is lazy, bad, self indulgent personal blogging - apologies Charlie

....so after cursing LA traffic all week (drove off a tank of gas in 3 1/2 days) - now it's Sunday, and it's all good.

After staying with Frank Reynolds for a few days, I'm staying with my friend Ruth (that I worked with at frogdesign (we started on the same day about 10 years (!) ago), and she lives in Santa Monica about a mile from the beach. So after DGA day yesterday (which was great, and I hung out and picked up some consulting clients at the after party), I got home and talked with Ruth and her friend Brian until about 1:30am (they'd gone to see Miami Vice).

Sunday I slept in, Ruth made some killer scones from scratch (anybody want the recipe? Ask in comments), then we all went down to the beach. Ruth and Brian (her boyfriend's brother) road bikes, but I walked a mile to the beach, jogged 2.89 miles (according to my Nike+iPod doohickey I got before I left, pace wittheld to protect the guilty), then walked and jogged on back, enjoying the people watching on Santa Monica Pier and Venice Beach.

After getting back I cleaned up and Frank, Ruth, Frank and I went to Roscoe's Chicken and Waffles, and Mama Ella took gooooooooood care of us. Oh my GAWD, that was good stuff.

Now I'm sitting in the cool Santa Monica evening, about to figure out what move to go see. So my LA experience is definitley improving.

Comments:
you should definitely go to CAFE BALCONY. its in santa monica. the best coffee in the country.

on the corner of santa monica and centinela

www.cafebalcony.com

PLEASE go there i promise you will love it. everyone goes to roscoes, but if you lived in LA, you would go to cafe

if you end up going, ask for garth, or gary, if they are there, they will do you up good

Go see your movie at the Arclight. Most other theaters in LA should be avoided at all costs.

Post scone recipe please.

And go see Little Miss Sunshine (just opened in L.A./N.Y. - will open elsewhere Aug. 4). Great little movie, possibly the best I've seen this year.

I want that scone recipe, too. And if there's a recipe for clotted cream or double cream, I'll take that, too... ;)

In Britain you get the stuff anywhere, when I looked on the internet on how to do it it read like a bomb-builder's handbook.

Since this is turning into a food thread.... I'll add my 2 cents... these ideas are based on 10 years at KCET (PBS LA) and the many shows we've done.

1st eat food you can not get in your home town.... are there lots of thai in texas? if not go to:

Palms Thai Restaurant (this place has a Thai Elvis & good food)
5273 Hollywood Blvd.
Los Angeles, CA 90027
323-462-5073

Bhan Kanom Thai (House of Thai Desserts)
5271 Hollywood Blvd.
Los Angeles, CA 90027
323-871-8030

can you get good ethiopian?
Rahel Ethiopian Cuisine
1047 South Fairfax Ave.
Los Angeles, CA 90019
323-937-8401

want classic hollywood?
Musso & Franks (oldes rest. in hollywood)
6667 Hollywood Blvd. (Between Cherokee and Las Palmas)
323-467-5123

need more ideas... just ask me -Harry
ps - I saw you at the DGA - said I liked your site after the Scott Billups talk

Mike, I have read everyone's post about how rough LA is. The traffic is pretty crazy for sure but I have found this place to be a true dreamers paradise. The talent here is second to none. My father in law is an Emmy award winning TV writer/producer, My wife is Debra Zanes casting associate. My professional circle runs trough some of the best shops in town. I have access to the best actors, compositors, 3D artists, writers in the world and I learn something new everyday. Its can be tough but I how found its worth it! Jeremy.

Hey Mike, whatever you do, don't leave LA without coming out to the Valley and trying Dr. Hogly Wogly's Tyler Texas Bar-B-Que at 8136 Sepulveda Blvd in Van Nuys! (818) 782-2480. Outstanding BBQ ribs, pork, brisket, and sausage!
Freeway close - off the 405 Fwy at Roscoe Blvd, east to Sepulveda, turn right and about a block down at 8136.

Damn you, Mike! I miss Roscoe's!! Aiiee! ;-) (Best thing you coulda done in L.A., man.)

Hogly Wogly is GREAT.... but dont fly from Texas to LA to get TEXAS style BBQ.... stick with the great ethnic food we have here in LA

Mike, as an Austin resident who spent many years in LA recently, here are some good ideas of where to eat stuff you won't get back here in Austin:

Zankou (great middle eastern rotisserie chicken)
Japanse/Izakaya/Sushi (tons of choices, almost everything better than anything available in Austin)
Thai (the post above was great)
Dim sum (head on out to SGV and experience some real dim sum)

All the way in Africa, also enjoy reading your posts.
Please post the scones recepy.last time I had some good ones it was years ago and my mum made them
continue writing
thanks
