Silicon Imaging camera used in 48 Hour Film Contest

CineForm Unplugged: Silicon Imaging in 48 hours a Success.

OK, this is the kind of blog entry I love to link to - new toys, and the hands on nitty gritty of using it in the field, and for a 48 hour film contest, no less!

Read on for how it went, what they used, problems encountered and overcome, etc. etc. etc.

They won best cinematography out of 44 entrants, and there are even HD downloads of the final short available as well.

Glad to see SI is pushing forward with their camera in field tests as it draws closer to commercial release.

Comments:
As much as I like RED I'm finding myself more geeked out over the SI camera. Perhaps just because it'll be out sooner. The Spoon blog is really interesting and the sample clips look really good to me. The footage workflow they have seems to be actually working reasonably well in that production.

One thing to keep in mind is that CineForm is not a "no-name" codec shop. There are a ton of people using Aspect HD for their HDV shoots, and SI's workflow is working well because CineForm knows there stuff and puts out great products with capabilities that nobody else can match (4 realtime HD streams, wavelet codecs with no blocking, now RAW compression, etc.).

One more thing: I've been using ProspectHD, and I don't think there's anything on the planet that can touch the quality of the codec at it's resolution/data-rate/performance combination. Just wish it was out for the mac :(

Nice thing is it's coming for mac later this year :)

bill - your comment was deleted due to flaming.

Vaporware is defined by being late and/or non-existent. I know the RED team well, they are backed by a passionate billionare, it isn't vaporware, and isn't even a candidate for being vaporware until it is late. They've made no promises, only engineering target dates that have yet to arrive.

Feel free to comment, but keep it at an adult level - if you wish to express doubts about their ability to pull it off, feel free to do so, but again keep it rational.
