Mike's Predictions for Apple's "Showtime" PR event

I've been thinking about Apple's expected announcement of a movie store, so here's my prediction:

1.) No Airport Express A/V device as I've written about in the past today.

2.) A true iPod video will be announced, widescreen - be nice if it had video outputs.

3.) downloadable movies will be the size of the new screen, maybe 480 pixels wide

4.) Hence movies will be below DVD resolution

5.) Prices will be as rumored- $15 for new, $10 for older movies

6.) This is a sucky price/value proposition - you can buy DVDs for same or less, rip'em with Handbrake, and have a DVD AND a digital asset for iPod etc.

7.) LATER, maybe WWDC, they might intro the Airport Express A/V type device. It'd have a wireless router with audio and video outputs, you download a movie to your Mac or PC, it gets streamed or wire connection to the AE A/V which decodes the signal and sends to TV, remote control signals are passed from AE A/V back to computer to start/stop/play/browse/etc.

8.) 6-12 months after that, an HD version, using a higher speed wireless interface for streaming

9.) At each step along the way, the res of the available movies increases, the price stays the same, the older/smaller version either goes away or is available at a lower price (probably just goes away though).

10.) Disney/Pixar movies to start - you can buy'em. If other studios, more likely rental model for those. More will follow, same as iTunes Store was.

All conjecture, of course I could be wrong, but it is always fun to guess.

My theory is that, as usual, Apple has waited to see if there is a possible market for something, will step into it slowly, one step at a time, and increase their presence and quality and commitment to match a bell curve of increasing demand over time for these kinds or products/services.

Right on Mike. Your predictions seem pretty good, can't wait to see how many of them are right. A widescreen iPod with 480 pixels wide would be something I would want. I'll continue to buy/handbrake my movies.

It's predeiction time! My two cents in this funny game:

Why would anyone buy/rent a movie when it's less than SD quality?
Steve Jobs has always stated that he did not believe there is a market for video on an iPod. The iPod video is a defence action. Videoclips and TV shows are tidbits that can be consumed on a small screen, but you want to see your movie in the best possible quality on your new flatscreen TV. Therefore I think there will be an A/V streaming device by the end of the day, possibly even HD. Remember the trailers you get with frontrow are already HD sometimes...

My bets lie with Martijn. I say we get SOME sort of HD distribution, even if only a few movies. The TV sets are in the living rooms already (here in Germany since the Football world Championship this summer), so the market wants content and trust in BluRay and HD DVD is nonexistent.
The quietly boosted Mac Mini would be a good choice for the basis of a digital hub, for it should be able to play HD content. I'd guess we get a new version of Front Row that's a bit more linked with iTunes. Some HD content, for the AirPort Express A/V thing I'd say 60/40. And yes, I'm quite convinced we'll get a new iPod, it's already been long since the last update, but that's really the part I care least about.

Maybe also updated macbook pro's. It's been a while on those as well. Doubt the iphone will appear tomorrow ... but that'd be great ... I need something other than RED to save up for.

The only two things I would add are:

a refresh to the cinema displays with eyesights and front row and HDMI in with a switcher (maybe if we all wish hard enough it will happen)

Quicktime will be refreshed in the background to use torrent technology without client side sharing allowing apple to have download centers all over the world all pitching in to every download making downloads as fast as possible--even to the point of your full bandwidth.

On an unrelated topic, for those of us who read your reviews and faxed in our orders to RED that they won't process until they get back. Can you make the case to look at the time and date of the fax to add us to the queue so we don't have to get behind everyone who placed their orders at the conference? We listen to you and until you saw it in its full 4k glory I wasn't ready to buy! (BTW: do you know what reservation number they are up to?)

I ordered my Red about a week before IBC and I'm #424.

Definite iPod Nano updates, and I think the video iPod as well. Just hope there's more to this than adding movie downloads to the iTunes store, especially if the resolution is less than DVD quality. I'm with Mike on this one, what's the point? Now, if they were to allow independent filmmakers to offer their features and shorts, that would be something of interest. Either way, I'm counting the minutes to 10am.

Reality is no new Video IPod as such, tiny selection of Disney movies (surprise surprise) plus new nanos etc. Stevie Boy had better have something bigger up his sleeve as it's dullsville at the moment.

Microshaft are going to be chasing hard and there's no new innovations here

Oh .. and it's only for the US market once again!!!

Mike, you have no idea how much I hate it sometimes when you're right...

At least this way the disappointment didn't come as a total shock to me.

Died I just read that right? HD content? He did it after all? Mr. Jobs, you are my man.

Mike, can't be right all the time, man. I'm not often happy about that. ;)

Anyways, let's see when we get this in Europe... :(

Yeah, my mistake for misreading live coverage on Macrumors.com. it said there he showed the Incredibles in HD, not 640:480. Can't say I've ever been so underwhelmed by an Apple media event.
I mean, seriously, why download SD version for 30 minutes when I can watch trailers on Front Row without any waiting.
Mike, you rule, man. JPE

I am only a recent convert to the Mac but I think people can expect a little too much at times.

The iPods continue to do well and the latest releases should freshen the market up a bit. Heck I've even considered getting one of the new 8G nanos.

The iTV is a bit of a let down but it still pre-production. I bet this product has been kicking around for some time waiting for 802.11 (n) to be ratified along with Airport n all.

If it was $199 its a no brainer but at $299 its a bit harder to justify. Its a product just a bit ahead of the curve and where supporting technology actually is/needs to be. I'm sure it'll turn into a great bit of kit in due course.

I'm surprised at no new big iPod, I mean just how many songs do you need on the go?

The iTunes update included a greyed out iPhone driver installation setting. Another hint at the future perhaps.

Apple have got some seriously good products out the door this year.
