Red drama - offices broken into, protos & data stolen
Break-in... - The Digital Video Information Network
There was a break in at Red's offices last night - "there was a break-in at the RED offices last night. Everything they took was camera and camera file related. " according to Jim Jannard, company founder. They "lost computers, files and drives plus prototypes that we would have preferred to keep in-house"
Industrial espionage? Sounds like it. The plot thickens...this is too interesting to not report! They are offering $100K reward. If you hear anything, sound off. Why do I get the feeling no prints will be found?

99% chance it is headed or already heading through customs going to another country. All custums places should be asked about it. The thing look slike a weapon, someone should remember.
1% chance it is heading to a certain location in Texas.

it's scary to think that this is the way the world works when people are worried about a new competitor. Why don't they just go and work a bit harder to bring out something better? Then we'd all be better off.
The thought that keeps running through my mind is... wasn't there an alarm? Security cameras? I know that at the dot com companies even there is 24 hours very tight security - full back ups everynight taken by armed guard to a locked security storage facilty. Seems like if you're on the cutting edge with something - you'd have all the security in place. Maybe they do and it was circumvented.
It will be interesting to see what new comes out on the market over the next year or two. Similar items will most likely cause further investgations if they don't get their thief now.
I pity the fools who think they can pull one over on Mr. Jannard & the Red Team. They can run ... but they sure can't hide.
Just a Note: Having a break in, spurring on talk of industrial espionage, and offering a huge reward for any information might just be the best piece of propaganda I could imagine RED ever having.
I'm not trying to get all conspiracy theory on this. I believe there really was a break-in. That being said, if RED really doesn't miss a beat they stand to gain much more from the publicity than they will lose from the sharing of any trade secrets. In all this is a big blesing in disguise. This camera officially has just gone 9.5 on the larger than life richtor scale.
When Red first started making those bold claims 4k with hgh frame rates, they had the most worthless unprofessional website I had ever seen. In a thread a long while ago on Mograph most professionals thought the camera was either a joke or a failure in the making. Now, this story really paints the picture that not only will RED be a success, but it now it looks like some important people are very threatened by it. Red has come a long way in less than a year. I'm impressed and intrigued. Mission accomplished.

I have seen pictures of the RED headquarters and its build like a tank. Also if you read further at the DVinfo thread, Robert Jackson describes the extreme sequrity measures he encountered while visiting the premises. It seems you need an army to break in. Then Jannard himself claimed that prottotypes, and computers were stolen - not just paperwork or CDs and subsequently raised the reward from 50K to 100K in just two hours.
But how you break out from a vault like this carrying computers and cameras in your arm?
I just hope this will not be an excuse for a delay, or another stand of RED's exemplary marketing campaign.

Expect a large fire closer to the shipping date that wipes out all stock.
I've seen this countless times. As soon as a company struggles to live up to expectations or deadlines break-ins and mysteriumuos fires tak place.
Anonymous above hits the nail on the head. Did someone "carelessly" leave a window open and the Doom 3 like security system off?
Was having difficulty believing RED in the first place now its becoming even harder.
Has Jannard pressed the panic button?

i find it hard to believe too...
if it would be a heist for a product that will earn millions or billions, i'd buy this, but how much money are they going to make of this camera??? or did red plan on going prosumer with a sub $2000 version in 720p/1080i/p 24/25/30/60fps??? let's say they might sell 1000 cameras over 2 years, that's 17.5 million, subtract all the $$$ they put into research, optics, programmers for the codec, they will be lucky to get 5 millions out of this.... and that's someone who has the research done, not someone who stole the protos and has no patents... let's see...
someone who has so vast resources and knows how to deal with trade secrets_> oakley <_ will not have his baby stolen... a stolen laptop, a stolen hard-drive, ok, but not camera prototypes and all the rest....
i might be mistaken, but this publicity is a gift from god... everyone in the business will be talking about red the next days... if this was not a break in i hope the ones responsible get punished, if it was a break in, i hope so too....
oh, and mike, please turn of the verification for posts... if someone is registered that should be enough... for unregistered people the verification is ok, but for someone who like to leave a comment regularly it is such a drag....

If it is industrial espionage, which it most definately seems like, it's one of the big boys, i'd think a company loosing money in the past few years ...... hmmmm now lets see.
An upstart making waves, serious ones, from a guys who makes sunglasses for a living, oh we cant have that. I just got myself an HVX200, my very first camera, and i've been in the Pro video & film biz for 16 years, 2 weeks after getting it I was sure the Red 1 or 2 or whatever was going to be my next purchase and very soon because of the way my business is going. And i know I'd need nothing else after that purchase.
Keep the faith guys, keep going as best as you can, no matter what happens you will get through and the camera will come out.
Another fear from the big boys is a leveling of the playing field. that means anybody can make a movie in 2K or 4K and screen it. When you fear change , you do some strange things. But its inevitable, this camera will come out and i AM going to buy one.
silly rabbits tricks are for kids

Ever see the movie Startup.com? That's exactly what happened! Seemed fishy to me too.

smokeonit - when I had verification turned off, I got TONS of really annoying comment spam - it is an unfortunate necessity of a semi-popular blog...

I can't believe that they left a camera prototype by the window and someone broke in and grab it. The funniest thing is Jannard's reply to someone who questioned the veracity of the claim. His post said: "Why don't you guys come help us clean up the glass?”. As if a broken window is irrevocable proof that somebody stole the camera. And the thing about the reward that has been doubled within two hours is totally hilarious. Since the stolen item is a non working early prototype and the stolen files were most certainly backed up, what’s the reason for a reward? There is nothing unique about the camera. They outsourcing the sensor and the redcode raw is another flavour of wavelet compression. Only the body design is original and doesn’t seem very functional anyway.
THE ONLY UNIQUE ABOUT THIS CAMERA IS ITS CLAIMED PRICE.
The rest (4k, wavelet, S35, raw format, etc) are already on the market albeit at much higher prices.
In my opinion is an ingenious marketing stunt in order to accentuate the importance of the camera. To make us believe that the camera is so revolutionary, so advanced, that even industrial espionage tactics are used by his competitors.
It fits perfectly with the name of the sensor (mysterium), the constant veil of secrecy, the gradual leakage of information, the sculpted camera body, the dramatic slogans (leaders of rebellion) and all the hype about reserving buying slots. As if the camera is a limited edition super car.
The reservations will probably skyrocket now and Jannard will have well over $500000 interest free money to pour into the development of his toy.
I just hope the final product is as brilliant as the marketing behind it.

Industrial spies are usually prone to use far more furtive tactics i.e. you find out you've been done when a competitor beats you to market with your own product.
I've been render monkeying today so I've had plenty of time to read the forums. For a nation that believes in free speech I was amazed to see the banning of people who dared to voice an alternate viewpoint. It's amazing just how quickly people will turn to censorship and yet free speech is one of the values we in the west are supposed to hold so high.
If free speech goes out the window when someone dares to bad mouth someone's favourite camera company, then perhaps theft isn't all that bad after all.

I've just skim-read the "Break in..." thread over on DVXuser. All 22 pages of it!
Hmm. I think I now understand how religions start.

“speech isn't free when sombody is paying hosting space for everyone to read your comments.”
Reading such a comment is it safe to assume that:
In United States the freedom of an individual is in direct proportion to his income…
Is this a prototype or a working model?
