Sonnet shipping $130 eSATA card for MacBook Pro laptops
MacNN | Sonnet ships eSATA ExpressCard adapter
-shipping now
-Express34 slot
-2 eSATA ports
-drive activity LEDs
-YES port multiplying, can connect up to 10 drives in 2 enclosures (2x5 each)
-NO not fast enough for most HD - because of bus speed limitations, about 100 MB/sec max write speed it would appear
Mike's Comments: I've used quite a bit of Sonnet kit, I like it, I like it a lot, this is good news for indies. Also, this pops to mind in terms of having hotswap drive enclosures for in-the-field P2 backup - you could even do RAID 1 sets for mirrored for data redundancy protection. Unless this product is an aberration from Sonnet's usual quality, I'd be inclined to recommend it sight unseen.

This is the Vydeo card rebadged. Promax are also selling it but cheaper!
HD editing on a laptop? HDV and DVCPROHD along with intermediate codecs are a real goer...Don't really think HD uncompressed is really being done on laptops eh? :-)
You missed a trick Mike, You can edit REDCODE at 27MB/s easy with this setup!!!!!

Anonymouse - didn't know it was Vydeo card rebadged, are you sure? Do we have any confirmation on that? Sonnet usually designs their own stuff, but I know Joel, one of their senior engineers, has left not too long ago.
As for REDCODE, assuming one could edit natively (which is a stated goal, but not a confirmed reality at this point in time), yes, you're absolutely correct that it could carry the datarate.
Tongue firmly in cheek, this is where I say "Hey! Anonymouse! What are you, some kind of shill for Red? All I ever hear from you is Red, Red, Red! Are you on their payroll or something!"
: D
Couldn't resist!
Thanks for pointing that out, and thanks for contributing, much appreciated. If you can get a confirm on that Vydeo thing I'd appreciate it.

Maybe I am wrong, but since the upcoming P2 adaptor for the P2 card will be using the MacBook Pro slot, SATA seems like a no go in the field, have to use a Firewire 800 or 400 connection for your external drives.-- Unless you use the P2 store or camera to feed the MacBook Pro.
James - DOH! Good thinking, and you're right!
The only way to use it for that would if:
a.) You buffered it to internal drive....lame/slow
b.) if there's a P2 reader on FW or USB 2.0 bus

Ignoring editing in the field for a mo. This is an ideal for on-set backup of Red drives. have the loader off in the truck listenign to MP3s and backing up the drives off a powerbook. I'd never get them out of there.
