Helluva credentialed quote on Red's Mysterium sensor from David Stump, ASC
(image from the front page of red.com)OK, so we all know I'm a big fan of what Red is up to, and while I feel qualified to evaluate an image, I'm no shooter nor DP, so I try to avoid passing judgements on shooting issues - I don't feel qualified to dive very deep in those areas. That is not the case, however, with David Stump (IMDB profile), who is a member of the ASC, and is also the chair of the Digital Camera subcommittee for the ASC.
After a day spent with the Red One camera shooting greenscreen tests:
"The RED Mysterium sensor has finally pushed digital acquisition past the timeless 35mm film barrier in resolution and clean color fidelity."
Now, that's a carefully phrased sentence, specifically talking about "resolution and clean color fidelity." He was doing greenscreen tests, and those are critical attributes to pulling a good key. This particular statement does not address dynamic range nor other vital imaging characteristics.
But it's a helluva pat on the back for the Red team.
There's lengthy threads on DVInfo.net and dvxuser.com, the latter has lots more technical discussion and the Red team chimes in on some issues as well.
I'm sure David will have more to say in the next few days, I'll be watching out and will report it here.

enough of this!
tell us when a comparision like this is up
http://www.cinematography.net/Pages%20GB/Film-Digi-comparison.htm
in science and technology, people put their theories/equipment up for the commmunity to compare, evaluate, etc.
RED has not even put up a F-stop stepped color/grayscale chart yet
and people put in a footnote saying "you can find this quote on XXX page of XXX book (now its website links)
where is the link to the quote? or did somebody at RED say "this guy said that"...
with the over-controlling way RED is releasing ( or NOT releasing) test shots/images is just completely unacceptable
when there is something as impressive as this
http://www.cinematography.net/largel-chip.htm
we will listen
until then, this has become some kind of "mac vs windows" flame war
enough!

....and Bill (couldn't resist) - with well over 5000 pageviews a day this week, I don't think shutting off all info is what most folks are interested in...
