Rumors of Final Cut Pro 6 at NAB

Think Secret - Final Cut Pro 6 set for NAB release, again

Was trying to not blog anymore today, but every once in a while I see something so off base I just have to write about it.

In short, this article thinks FCP 6 will be seen at NAB 2007: that part I agree with.

They think it'll be shipping at NAB: I'd love for that to be true, but I doubt it.

They think it was going to debut last year but got delayed - so phenomenally wrong. Last year, they'd barely gotten a Universal Binary (runs on PPC and Intel Macs) out the door, they weren't going to be shipping a new version scant months later. They've been busy. Hopefully doing cool stuff like freeing FCP's deep code from the "one codec, one framerate, one resolution) limitation of the timeline, but we'll have to wait and see.

Will it REQUIRE Leopard and an Intel Mac? I doubt it - they'd be leaving soooo many machines behind if they did that. Might they have features that only work on Leopard and/or Intel Macs? That I think is much more likely, perhaps even some things are realtime on Mac Pros, for instance (maybe requiring Leopard, maybe not), but they'll still render non-realtime on PPC hardware.

As for Final Cut Extreme - they say it is rumored to be $10K for hardware/software combo to do 4K and that puts them in Avid pricing territory. This is so laughably wrong in so many ways;

1.) Avid hardware costs either a lot less (Mojo, Mojo SDI) or a lot more (Adrenaline)

2.) Avid's editorial lineup doesn't do 4K

3.) Apple can't even properly do 2K yet (you can get 4:4:4 or 10 bit, not both at same time, and no realtime FX for either, just playback) - let'em get that right first

4.) New RAIDs are likely - 4 GBit cards shipped recently from Apple

4K is SUCH a small niche market at the moment - only highest end feature films are getting mastered to 4K - that Apple has no business getting into it yet. YEARS away from there being enough users that Apple's current business strategy would make that make sense.

More misinformation or off-base data continues through the rest of the article....but suffice it to say, I'm betting we'll see something new at NAB, but I'll betcha it won't be close to shipping. They may SAY it will ship "soon" or "in a few months" but historically, anything shown at NAB as Not Done Yet doesn't ship until July to September (witness Motion, witness FCP 5.1.x update to get 24p HDV)
Comments:
They've been way off on video stuff at Thinksecret for a while. They had an article last year about how Red would be a $200k camera without even checking Jannards posts about how it was going to be affordable.

FCP 6 is finally going to hit IMO but I agree that it will probably be delivered in early summer. I'm hoping that Apple announces Logic 8 at Musikmesse with a few hints about FCS integration. Thanks for clearing up this messy article.

Mike, if you look at Media Composer Adrenaline, prices are comparable. The Avid system (workstation plus software) is more expensive but the storage is cheaper because it uses light compression (DNxHD). If you have a drive system that can playback 1:1 SD, you can repurpose it for your DNxHD online suite. Neat!

I once did a test to see how FCP could handle 2K footage. The system was a Mac Pro, Quad 3GHz with 12 GB of RAM and 10K Raptor RAID storage. A pretty fast machine.

The 2K project took over an hour to load. Memory usage shot up until I had only about 300 MB left. I had to render it in short sections of about 10 frames or so. This rendering process would take about 5-10 mins for 10 frames.

It played in real time after rendering but I did not dare to try any effects or color correction.

So I'm not expecting a 4K-compliant FCP any time soon.

I agree, Think Secret are pretty laughable, though.

I hope their rumor about FCP making better use of the gfx hardware is true, though... also that Apple catches up to PCs and releases a Nvidia 8000-series based card, so that you'll be able to work properly...

I make up more accurate rumors than ThinkSecret! So wrong it hurts when I laugh ...

Strangely enough Bruce most of us can "work properly" on our FCP systems at the moment!

Prepare for sharp intakes of breath at NAB that's all I can say - It's going to be BIG!

Actually, ThinkSecret are more often right than not. And FCP6 is WAYYY overdue, so I don't see why it wouldn't be ready ship soon. As for 4K support, why not? Makes sense to have the technology in place when we're heading towards a 4K future surely? It isn't going to harm them to support 4K, even if the majority use it for 2K and under for the next couple of years.

Stephen, Thinksecret USED to be reliable, that was before the now infamous lawsuit.

Now, they are 99.9% WRONG all the time and have becomed a joke, much like Macosxrumors (not to be confused with Macrumors)!

Avid DS Nitris will handle 4K, just not in realtime.

I wouldn't put it past Apple to make FCP 6 Leopard-Intel only. It would sell quite a few computers and they are going to have to make the break sooner or later.

I am starting to doubt Apple is in a rush to update Xserve RAID to 4Gbit. Remember that especially in an Xsan environment, the bottleneck is not the 2Gbit on each controller, but the data the controller itself can process. I don't think the controller is close to saturating the 2Gbit fibre channel, esp. w/ RAID 5/Xsan.

please understand that there is some information that is good in these posts, but its not grouped properly.

avid systems range all different prices, some over 100k.
FC6 or extreme WILL be at NAB 2007.
Hardware solutions for just a raid that can handle 4k is over 10k... so that price is inaccurate.

The bandwith of the raid and FC cards will be, or should be a non issue. 4k just means faster hardware and an additional preset. not an app rewrite.

I can do 4 k on custom linux and sgi boxes. And i know others who have tested speeds of 4k on macs.

the question really is, will phenomenon be introduced in the new FC6 as a module at NAB. my sources said he doubts it. But they have been known to preview software a year away before.

I think FCP 6 or FC Extreme (or whatever name its given) will have support for 4k footage- and it will work!

I have a source who has told me that RED and Apple have been working together- for a while. Apple has been working on RED software and REDCODE.

IF a 4K Final Cut is coming (unlikely) this is how I see it working:

FCP6 - non 4K cool update.

Final Cut Extreme - 4K and Leopard/8 core Mac Pro ONLY.
