Latest on Apple's NAB FCP plans - Final Cut Extreme?
MacNN | Apple removes FCP crossgrade ahead of NAB - which is more supporting evidence that Apple is going to introduce something new at NAB.
Got an email from a reader who talked to an Apple rep who claimed a new higher end version of Final Cut, aimed squarely at Media Composer, would be rolled out at the show, with new better/faster codecs. My usual sources have been VERY quiet as to Apple's future product plans, so I don't know whether to credit this authentic or not, and if the story is true, it could be that the Apple rep didn't know and was just repeating the rumors from last year.
I don't know where Apple is with this. Apple still has plenty to fix with the basic version of FCP before launching into a bigger version, lets just see what NAB brings us - or more accurately, that big press thing Sunday morning BEFORE NAB, I'll be there. Avid has an event scheduled later that day.

Amen to that. I'd be happy to see a more direct challenger to Media Composer just to keep Avid moving forward but it's those little nagging things that FCP has had around since the early days that need addressing if they want to target those hi-end houses that swear by Avid.

....which is why I put it in there. It is a great DV editor, but for higher end finishing, it has all kinds of unresolved challenges and "broked" stuff - which is why I felt compelled to put that caveat in there.
Fix Media Manager.
Fix white clipping on export.
Fix XML.
Fix inconsistent file output (timeline/browser/viewer)
Fix RGB 4:4:4 issues
Fix format support issues
etc.

What doesn't make sense about the rumor is that the things Apple needs to fix to compete with Avid are not color correction, 4k, compsiting, scripting, or any of the other things that have been rumored in Final Cut Extreme. What they need are:
-- revised Media Manager
-- better XML support
-- data management for editing projects with multiple editors
-- and, so help me God, a trim tool that is more intuitive.

My god, if apple doesn't allow you to select multiple keyframes at a time so you can drag a group of keyframes wherever you like, in this new version i am going to scream!!! I have been asking for this feature for years now to no avail. I can't even say how many times i have needed this selection tool. Along with better logging information etc.
Hmmm - It was not a claim - I DID talk to the Apple feller - One of Apple's field FCP support types. Long time friend of about 15 years...
I think you are going to see that FCP Extreme is a totally new product - From a different dev team. So keep on nagging for the fixes in FCP 5.x.

Hey B-Scene - pardon - I didn't mean to imply that you didn't have the conversation, just that the Apple guy might not have had the true story as to what to expect!
No disrespect or mistrust of you intended at ALL.

I thought about switching to mac, but after seeing one with fcp running I´ll surely not do so - why in hell do you need a conversion step via quicktime to use tga sequences ??? I can directly import nearly everything into premiere - mac ? at least not yet !
macnn.com's article is badly researched journalism. It has been known for months that the crossgrade offer would be withdrawn at the end of March. Originally it was due to end last December but they extended it.
I still don't believe the FCP Extreme rumors. Goes against everything Apple have done so far with FCP. A complete rewite of FCP and the option to use very high end graphics cards with FCP and get a large increase in performance is far more likely IMHO.

This comment is disturbing. As an FCP user since version 1.0 I've lived with the limitations and problems with FCP for many years. I'd like to hope they would fix these nagging problems in their "bread and butter" version and not just fix it in a $10,000 version. If you want to put Final Touch color grading in that version that's fine but if they don't use their acquired media management company to make the regular FCP media management better then I will lean more on my Avid software in the future.
