BIG price drop for 8GB P2 cards- $500 less!
Learn about Panasonic's AJ-P2C008HG - 8GB P2 High Performance Card
Hey, the Easter Bunny left me a present while I was away - P2 cards just dropped substantially in price.
Now, instead insanely, ludicrously expensive, they're just really expensive!
Panasonic now lists 8GB P2 cards for $700, so I'd expect the aggressive web retailers to drop to about $625-$650 (from about $1100-$1200).
This is a BIG chunk of progress, you'll be able to buy nearly 60% more recording capacity for the same amount of money. $2400 used to get you 16GB of capacity, now it will get you 24GB with $300 left over. I wouldn't go buying stacks of them yet, I think I heard Panasonic predict 32GB cards for $1000 by year's end (is that right? Somebody bust me if I'm wrong on that.)

Comments:
Last fall, Panasonic rep told me 16GB cards would be announced at NAB and that 32GB cards would soon follow, certainly within 2007.
Well.. Panasonic had announced 16 GB P2 cards would be released in 2006. So we'll see if they deliver this time, but by then, on a personal note., I'll be shooting to a Red Drive.
Cheers,
Damien
PS It's a shame, the low capacity and high price of P2 cards really killed the potential of the HVX to take some of the market share. Some people I work with are about to sell their HVX and buy two V1s instead.

With the relatively low price of media for RED and for the forthcoming Infinity camera, P2 prices are now looking very expensive
Why is there a consensus with RED owners that the HVX is a competing camera?
It's not. You're spending how many thousands of dollars on your systems? When does your editing support come along? How soon til number 405 in line is called?
Sorry, expensive or not, p2 is here, now, and supported.
Aside from that: The price drop is nice, it's just too bad that vendors are pretty much plenty out of stock on 8gb P2 cards at the moment.

Hey kids, be nice. Why do you Red futurists need to trash a current and available 1/3" ccd camera package that costs 1/5 the price?
Mark - exactly. Different cameras, different markets, similar recording options is all.
Nobody bitches at Hondas for not driving like an M3.
Nobody bitches at Hondas for not driving like an M3.
I'm not trashing the camera because in it's small way it's as much of a revolution as the RED camera will be, I'm just pointing out that P2 Card prices have been and still are a rip-off!
In it's small way? What's wrong with you?
Anyway, man. A few bad apples in the RED camp are turning out to be the few bad apples in the "TRUE 24P" Camp.
Get a life and get to shooting. OH WAIT! RED AIN'T HERE YET!

Do keep in mind:
1.) They are high performance, tested to be more reliable than average similar general purpose solid state memory
2.) It is set up as a small RAID in there
3.) it is a tiny, tiny market as compared to general SSM market
4.) They have to amortize R&D, marketing, etc. into the price of those

In conjunction with Mike Curtis' post:
An HVX owner accidentally dropped his camera in a lake while shooting. Camera was gone...
Both p2 card's footage were perfect.
P2 Media is priced as it should be. With any technology, the price will naturally fall and then become available through 3rd party means when able.

Before the HVX, the cheapest way you could shoot 24p HD was with a Varicam or similar at upwards of $80,000. The HVX offered a lot of promise for such a small package and pricepoint. RED is significant, however, in that it not only does the 24p HD that the HVX offers, but true 4K and storage options that are a fraction of the cost of P2. And while the camera does cost more than the HVX, it's still a third of the cost of a Varicam - the previous "lowest cost" benchmark.
Coincidentally, I myself sold my HVX to buy a RED... so while some may feel they aren't competitive products "at all," the truth is there are more than a few of us with actual purchase histories to say they are. :-)

Red doesn't exist. When it does, when it's actually available- great. Another fun tool that has its uses. The HVX has a place in production today, and will tomorrow too.
Why all the anger, Red Fanboy(s)? You sound like the guy who discovers hammers and not only thinks that everything now looks like a nail, but also feels some strange need to put down and belittle screwdrivers.
Get out and work. Show the world your talent instead of being an anonymouse flameboy. And remember- nobody gives a fuck what type of brush Picasso used.

"Red doesn't exist" well I've got some bad news for you - it does and in 4 days time you and all the narrow minded doubters will be proved wrong once and for all.
You're right that the HVX has a place in production and if you ACTUALLY READ the posts no-one is criticising the camera. Some people just think the P2 media is too expensive. That's not flaming that's just expressing an opinion.

"Some bad news" "narrow minded doubters"?
Oh Geez. Clearly some weird Red person who needs to spend more time outside has a persecution complex and is venting it here.
Patrick is right- you can't go to a rental house and rent a Red today. Nor can you plunk down money and actually get a Red today. It will be some time before you can, unless you're a lucky low number reservation holder. And nobody- NOBODY- here is putting down Red in any way. When it REALLY exists as a viable rental or purchase option I'm sure many of us will use it.
Dude, you are making Red people look very foolish and obnoxious.

lol i find all of this very funny, who cares about some mythical 4k camera? most consumers watch standard def tv on their plasmas and think it's high def already, so i'm gonna keep shooting with my xl1 and making money while you wealthy gentlemen argue about silly things and don't do anything. besides, i heard sony has a new 4k camera that blows red away coming out in 6 months. it'll retail for $5500, including lcd and hard drive.
Children, behave.
Red isn't mythical, it just hasn't shipped quite yet. I expect to get personally hands on with an actual camera, in the field, owned by a private individual, within 60 days tops.
Anonymous above - don't go spreading rumors you know aren't true, now. ; )

Good grief will you please READ the comments on this talkback instead of frothing at the mouth about RED.
ALL that was said about your precious HVX was that the P2 media was too expensive - which it is!

Actually, re-reading all this it is clear that you are the one frothing about Red and writing in a tone that, at it's best, could be described as snarky. What are you, a republican? The way you write is just like the speeches we used to create for Newt Gingrich. We learned back then that tone was everything.
Yes, I'm atoning for those sins these days.
So keep on lying- because that's what you're doing here. Intelligent people will get the facts for themselves and make intelligent decisions. Just like they did in Florida.
Oops, or maybe not.
Point is, hype and tone rule. And you, my friend, are working from a very specific playbook that is clearly recognizable, even if you really are a businessman from California (c'mon I know you).

Simply no answer to that paranoid rubbish you are spouting there I'm afraid.
Sorry to have unintentionally caused all these people to post such venomous posts on your blog Mike. I won't be rising to the bait anymore on this one.

OK, flag on the field, folks are getting nasty, or at least mean and inaccurate, a comment has been deleted.
Why? Because I thought they went too far for me to let that stand on my own site.

Newt Gingrich? That's insulting.
I'd think it would be clear by now that RED is taking a page out of Steve Job's book. In fact, I consider RED to be the new Apple.
It takes extreme dedication and a focused vision to go where no company has gone before. And we're doing that. We're changing the world here, people, make no mistake about it.
What you'll see in a few short days will become the death knell of the big boys. Those companies don't care about providing you, the artists, the tools you deserve. RED does. Instead of holding back technology like certain companies do, we push the envelope.
In fact, we own the envelope now. You can be a part of this revolution.

When I said "Hey kids, be nice" I never imagined it would devolve so completely!
Prickly Redsters may make for easy sport, but let's resist further "red baiting"... at least until they start beta-testing their expensive new toy and hit some bugs! :)
