Announcement #1: Introducing HD for Indies Amazon Affiliate Store

SHORT VERSION:

Hey all -

Want to know what gear to get, or what gear I recommend, or maybe support HD for Indies but don't have extra money sitting around to hire me for advice? No problem - go to the brand new HD for Indies Amazon Affiliate Store.

From there, you can buy all your usual Amazon stuff - books, DVDs (including Blu-ray & HD DVD), training materials, Macs, monitors, accessories, iPods, AppleTV, etc. etc. etc. - all with the same great Amazon price, support, return policy, etc....except that on my pages, you see what I think of the gear, you see what I specifically recommend, and if you buy from my pages, and HD for Indies gets a small commission on the sale.

LONGER VERSION

I see this as an "everybody wins" kind of a thing - if you buy stuff from Amazon, I'd appreciate it if you'd buy it through my store - you're still buying from Amazon, just that HD for Indies gets a commission. Same price, same everything you usually get, I don't see your credit card #s, etc. But I've also done a lot of sifting for you, and boiled it down to just the good/valid choices.

I have it organized by category and subcategory (see below), and I've included notes on those products that I specifically recommend (look for Mike Recommended in the notes). Just the good stuff, none of the rest of the fluff. I've gone through and scoured Amazon's bazillions of options and filtered it down to the stuff that I think you and I would be most interested in. And if there's something you'd like to buy that I don't have listed, please tell me and I'll add it to the store right away.

Aside from computer hardware and software, there's also an extensive listing of training materials, all of which I've vetted for "Is it good?" The ones that I have more intimate knowledge of and recommend most I've labelled with Mike Recommended.

Curious about what books are best for Adobe or Apple software? Want to know which HDV camcorders I recommend? Want to know what's the best deal on an uprezzing DVD player, or HD DVD or Blu-ray player? It is all in there.

So feel free to peruse the hundreds of items I've already added to the store, with more to follow:

HD For Indies Store - Home Page

BOOKS: Books on Movie Making, Final Cut Pro/Final Cut Studio Books, Avid editing books, Adobe editing/post books

CAMERAS: HD camcorders, Recommended Consumer Camcorders

MACS: Tower Macs (Serious Editing), Mac Pro Accessories, Mac laptop computers, iMacs, Macs for editing, Consumer Macs

MOVIES: DVD New Releases, HD-DVD New Releases, Blu-ray New Releases, Movies Mike Owns - Part 1, Movies Mike Owns - Part 2, Movies Mike Owns, Part 3

SOFTWARE: NEW Apple Video/Audio software, Apple Software UPGRADES, NEW Adobe Software, Adobe Software Upgrades

TRAINING MATERIALS: Training DVDs, Training Books

AppleTV & iPod: AppleTV and cables/accessories, iPod Shuffles, iPod nano, iPods (full size, video), iPod Accessories

HD Players- HD-DVD & Blu-ray

HDTVs

You can also buy:

DVDs from my store:

HD DVDs from my store:

Blu-ray movies from my store:

And again, if you aren't familiar with how an Amazon Affiliate Store works, you're dealing with Amazon, just through my front end built with Amazon's tools. The pricing is exactly what you'd otherwise get from Amazon.com, I never see your personal or credit card information, it IS Amazon except that you're going through my front end, where I've organized it in a hopefully useful way for you.

This is the first of several announcements I'll be making in the next day or three. If you're interested in buying a Mac based editing system, this is ONE OPTION, but NOT the bigger deal I was hinting at the other day.

I was going to give you some serious sh*t for having "Happy Feet" in your DVD selection above, until I realized that it's a rotating kind of thing...

Mike,

Congrats.....good idea. I'll be sure to use you're micro-site when I use Amazon.
Can I buy anything from amazon thru your site?

One thing would be great on the book front......

Video/film workflow
Video codec/compression
Color space

Important as you know in order to assess quality in your post.
Yeah I know it eats into your consulting but , seriously, if I could go to a site that give me all that info on codecs, color space, quality comparisons along with file size/cost of equipment blah blah, you wouldn't get me off it.

Also any reason you went for portrait and not landscape on the page framing...means you also have to scroll!! also when you link out (from your site) can you make the link open in another window. please.

Enough of that....

well done/Good luck...

Dave Farland

ps: did you ever take that $150k from Jim? I think not....

Good stuff Mike. Thanks! I buy everything but groceries from Amazon. I'll start shopping through your store. Question: If I put something in my cart through your store, then add other items not included in your store to the same cart, will you benefit from the entire sale? I hope so. Can't wait for more announcements.

Dave - anything that is on my store I get a commission on, if there's something you want that I don't list, tell me and I'll add it - is why I put a catch-all category as the last one in the list on the site.

Books on those topics - I've been busy working on what I've got up there, will keep adding more post relevant stuff as I find it going forward.

As for portrait mode - that's Amazon's call not mine - limited formatting options with their tools.

-mike

Paul - if put through my store and you add more non-store stuff, my understanding is I'll only get a cut on stuff that came through my store.

However, as I mentioned above, I have a Request category at the bottom, so if you want to buy something through me - just let me know and I'll add it! (within reason - no $2 cables, please)

-mike

Methinks that Mike will be doing the same affiliate store thingee as Barefeats.com does...am I right? =)

Hey Mike, I'll for sure be buying my amazon purchases through you, BUT, that whole "too low to display" price thing on the macs is seriously weak.

Any chance you can just let folks view the price without forcing them to take an additional step of "add to shopping cart"?

I think I'm not alone in saying it's not efficient, which is what us editors are all about. :-)

JVCs GY-HD200 is missing in the camera store. This camera has two big advantages on the HD-111: it has 720p60 or 720p50 - great for slomo - and it has a built-in image rotate function - great for using 35mm DOF adapters such as the Redrockmicro M2.

Anonymous - YES the "too low" pricing thing is totally weak, and I have ZERO control over that. Basically, any price that is below MAP (minimum advertisable price) set by a manufacturer can't be openly displayed, so all resellers have to play games that way. Nothing I can do about it.

Ben - very true! I'll go add it if they sell it.

UPDATE - Ben - oh yeah, that was why - Amazon doesn't offer the 200 or 250.

Any plans to do the same thing over the pond Mike? amazon.co.uk, that is.

That's a good idea, but I'll have to see what it would take to set up, or if I can even do that from over here. It was a good bit of work to get all that set up - if there were an easy way to transfer it, it'd be a snap to set up for .uk, .nl, etc. - but if not, it may take me a while to get to it - I'll need to see how well this one goes over first. But I do realize how many readers I have across the pond...

-mike

great idea, I just bought a book through your store and will come back in the future when I need something film related.

only thing is - where it has the 'listmania' lists, I'm assuming those are other people's lists, and that you don't get comission on them, no? Kindof confusing and it draws people away from your store. Maybe there is a way for amazon to take it off or put at the very bottom of the page out of the way.

So if I want something that is not there, just e-mail you and have you add it?

B-Scene - YEP. Exactly.

Preferably something more meaningful than a box of Q-tips, but yeah - I set up a page at the end of the list specifically for client requests.

Good idea Mike. I like to help you out in any way I can. After all you have already provided me with a wealth of information. Too bad you didn't post this last week, I just got me a Blu-ray burner....
