Final Cut Studio 2 ships! For some....

Hey all - it would appear that Final Cut Studio 2 is shipping - I got an email from a reader claiming they received a "has shipped" confirmation from Apple, and Apple's online estimates have shifted (see pic). New versions are shipping first - as a business decision that makes SOME sense - serve new clients, with highest profit margin, first.

In the meantime, it would appear that existing loyal upgrading/updating clients are getting served...after that. Maybe it is just that the new/standalone versions were ready or ordered first, and the upgrade versions were ready or ordered second, but it does stick in my craw a little bit - couldn't they have both been ready at the same time?

In any case, update versions are stated to ship in 2-3 weeks, new versions ordered now will ship in 3-5 days according to Apple Online Store as of Wednesday afternoon (May 16, 2007).

If you haven't ordered yours yet, now that it IS shipping it might be a good time to do so. You can order your new copy, or an upgrade from Final Cut Studio, or an upgrade from any prior version of Final Cut Pro from the HD for Indies Online Store. It is an Amazon Affiliate store, so you're dealing with Amazon and paying the same Amazon price, but HD for Indies gets a cut to help support the site.

OH! And kudos to Apple for shipping EXACTLY when they said they would! That is SUCH a rarity for an NAB announced product - they said it'd ship in about a month, and they actually beat that estimate! Congrats, FCS team....go sleep!

UPDATE - and Michael Horton of the LA FCP UG pointed out the manuals can be downloaded here.

Rockin', thanks Michael!

Time to go scratch 'n sniff around in those....as if I didn't have enough to do already tonight...and for the record, as expected, the word "Redcode" does not appear once in the FCP 6 manual, the Working with High Definition
and Broadcast Formats manual, nor the New Features in Final Cut Pro 6.

A future version is expected to support Redcode RAW 4K, we don't have specifics on that as yet.

My order currently lists -

FINAL CUT STUDIO 2 UPGRADE-FCP,PS-INT
Ships by: 07/06/2007
Delivers by: 11/06/2007

Thats from Apple AU/NZ, although I think we should have it shipping the same day as everyone else.

Oww - another 3 weeks. Hopefully that will change to a closer date.

In the meantime you can download the FCP 6 manuals from Apple here

Hey Mike... when are you going to reveal your third secret announcement from last week?

Anon above - when the eggs hatch...

...actually, I'm delayed due to a magazine article deadline.

Hey Mike!

Just checked my FCS upgrade (int. english) order I made on 4/16. They say it'll ship by 5th July....

....ahhhh....

greetings from Zurich / Switzerland

Sandro

Sandro - July 5th or 7/5? Is there a possible Euro/American date order issue here? If they said 5/7/07, that means May 5th in "American"

sorry if it was confusing, it really is meant as 5th July or in american date format 07/05/07 - unfortunately for us still a long time to go.

The Apple part Nr. btw is: MA888Z/A which means international english.

I always prefer the english versions to work with.

cheers

"Color" me disappointed. I absolutely LOVE the fact that you can mix resolutions and framerates in the timeline. I also think I will love "Color," though I will use it sparingly for 90% of projects I do.

That said, I just got done reading the "What's New?" document and was surprised how few changes there are to FCP6. I'm pretty disappointed. No major changes like logging while digitizing, no change to the media manager?!! Crap...AVID fans can still hold out for two things better than FCP. Two! :-)

I had heard so much about a whole team of people working on FCP6 that I'm wondering if it isn't for the next version...truly a groundup build for the new OS?

kw

...just read the manuals... such a tease though! I was hoping to be up all night reading about "Color" and "Motion"... but those manuals aren't up yet :( Boo

I think based on the vibe I got at NAB Studio development went like this -

FCP - 10%
Motion - 30%
Color - 10% (its still basically final touch but with some more integration)
DVDSP - 0% (!)
Soundtrack 2 - 30%
Compressor - 10%
ProRes - 10%

Was it Mike who pointed out for all the new compressor bits, its multi core implementation is basically to make more instances of itself to use them all - not ideal.

No matter what they've improved or haven't - quite the deal for what you get.

Considering how much Final Touch was, it sure is a GREAT deal that Apple is bundling it (not for free, people...it's a $500 upgrade).

That said, if you don't use a new feature, it's not worth as much to YOU. I remember when multi-cam editing was put in and everyone was so excited. Funny thing is, 90% of people don't know how to use it. I do, often, but I'm constantly the only one I know using it. So how big a feature was that?

I am NOT complaining that Apple doesn't give us a lot for the money. I just hope and wish that at some point they go back and address some of the issues they've had since it was released. I hope this will happen on the NEXT version now...k

my card has just been charged for the upgrade.

and the shipping date is 31st may, but it no longer gives a delivery date.

cant wait to get it here. Time for me to order that mac pro i've been after.WOOHOO!!

Motion manuals are uo too. As well as compressor 3, DVDSP 4.2.

Even DVDSP has been tinkered with.

well, i think they made a lot of nice little improvements under the hood..
like:

"Improved Gamma Handling
Final Cut Pro now allows you to specify how gamma is handled for video media files using RGB-based codecs (such as Animation and None). Many still-image formats are also supported, including JPEG and TIFF. You can assign a default gamma level for all imported clips, and you can also adjust an individual clip’s Gamma Level property in the Browser or the Item Properties window. "

"Improved Broadcast Safe Filter and New RGB Limit Filter "

"OMF Export with Level and Pan Settings
OMF files can now include audio level and pan keyframes."

"Surround Sound Audio Output Preset
A new audio output preset called
5.1 Monitoring allows you to easily set up your system to monitor 6-channel audio created in Soundtrack Pro or other applications with surround sound capabilities. "

"External Video Monitoring
You can now output to external video interfaces whose settings don’t match those of your sequence. Here are some examples of some of the possibilities:

- A DV or HDV sequence output to an SDI signal on a third-party interface

- An uncompressed NTSC or PAL sequence output to a DV FireWire output
- An HDV sequence output to a DV FireWire output"

i'm sure there will be still a lot of shortcommings and bugs, but those details are worth just as much to me as fancy new features.
++ chris

and here is one more:

"Renaming Clips and Media Files
Two new commands allow you to quickly rename media files to match clip names and vice versa:

Modify > Rename > Clip to Match File

Modify > Rename > File to Match Clip
For example, suppose you capture some DV footage and the resulting media file and clip are both named Untitled. You can quickly give both the clip and media file more meaningful names by changing the clip name in Final Cut Pro, selecting the clip, and then choosing Modify > Rename > File to Match Clip."

how often did i want to get rid of all those Untitled-1 clips (yes, i'm a sloppy logger)
++ chris

ps: i like that the captured files get a .mov extention now as well.
