How Cool Is This? My jaw LITERALLY dropped

TED | Talks | Blaise Aguera y Arcas: Photosynth demo (video)

Check out this image manipulation tech - the first part (Seadragon) is interesting, the second half is Photosynth, and that's, hmm....what's the technical term for it? F*****g AMAZING.

Imagine throwing the keyword "Notre Dame" at Flickr, and then building a 3D representation of it, a navigable space.

Just watch, and be amazed. And keep in mind, he's driving it not from some supercomputer, but from a laptop....WOW.

PS - Thanks to Jim Geduldick for sending this coolness in.

ah Mike how sweet.

Blogtastic to much stuff to read on the page today just how i like it.

That really was amazing! (that's so thinking "outside of the box").

...and equally cool was the guy's T-shirt :D

Wow thanks Mike!

I love that TED. Last year Jeff Han (and look at all the apps now) and this year that presentation. Fantastic stuff. My jaw dropped when the little point cloud turned into angles of view and then a full reconstructed Notre Dame. COOL!

demo looks great!

real world: http://labs.live.com/photosynth/

there it tells me:
"Windows XP SP2 and Vista Only
The Photosynth technology preview runs only on Windows XP SP2 and Windows Vista."

not surprising, it's microsoft who else.....;-(

cheers

That's the tip of the iceburg. If you want to see where it's really headed check this out. http://www.microsoft.com/surface/ Which from the looks of it Microsoft bought all of Hans stuff and ideas. http://cs.nyu.edu/~jhan/ftirtouch/
There are some potential issues with it. Mainly, it's an installation that depends on projectors, which means it's not going to work very well if multiple people are hunched over it. It would be much, much cooler if
it was a mobile mat that you could put anywhere.

I see video editing taking this route via Minority Report. Moving clips with your hands not a mouse our pen.

I've had some friends complain that the link doesn't work for them. It's your system that has the problem because the link works fine.. Just FYI

The important thing about "Surface" is what M$ have kept quiet about i.e how it works.

Two cameras, an under table projector and a PC for each table. Do I want all that crap in my lounge? No thanks. I'll just wait for Apple to release an elegant solution.

Photosynth is very interesting and could revolutionise the visual effects industry. Most of the development of this projects seems to have happened prior to it being akquired by M$ and now it is in the M$ fold one can only expect it to under achieve its full potential.

There's another amazing video going around of video imaging research coming out of U of W:

Incredible!

Now... how to get all my spam linked together?

This reminds me of how splunk works as a search engine of log files across a network for sysadmins.

Jim I also saw the link on the Creative COW blog but surely you should have told Mike where you saw it. Isnt that blog etiquette?
