Panasonic P2 software for Mac - at last!
P2 Contents Management Software | DVCPRO P2 Series | Broadcast and Professional AV
Hey all -
Panasonic has released a Mac version of their P2 browser software. It lets you display, ingest, search, categorize, display/edit properties, view/play back, add text or voice memo, export, back up, archive, and restore footage.
Along the lines of yesterday's post about having proper versions, it requires OS X 10.4.10 and QT 7.1.6 (but NOT 7.2, is incompatible at present!).
More info on this page as well.
Download Mac version with this, manual here.
And its free!

ps - thanks to those who sent in the link!

So I imagine this being useful on a computer that doesn't have fcp installed. Is there any use for it on a fcp workstation?
there has already been software for the mac that would do all this, actually a couple of different ones. The main problem is that you can't read the p2 cards without using the camera or the P2 Store, or the like.
What we really need is a hardware solution to read the P2 cards via firewire or USB2 or something. We had to buy a PC laptop just to be able to read the P2 cards in the field. lame...

Uhm, there are two "hardware solutions" for importing P2 cards that I can think of:
• The Panasonic P2 drive that holds 5 cards and connects via USB 2.0
• The third-party PCMCIA/ExpressCard 34 adapter
• The Panasonic P2 drive that holds 5 cards and connects via USB 2.0
• The third-party PCMCIA/ExpressCard 34 adapter
does anyone know of a reader that will plug into a desktop that is more reasonably priced, maybe just one card at a time? that PCMCIA-Express card adapter is reasonable but only works with macbook pros.
I might be mistaken, but I believe you can use the 60GB P2Store as a single-card "drive" for loading the cards directly into your NLE, versus offloading themt to the P2Store first (I was just on the line with a client who was doing this.) The P2Store isn't cheap, but I do remember it being cheaper than the actual 5-card drive. In any case, they are all a LOT cheaper than a DVCPROHD VTR like the 1400A.
The P2 Store is crap and regardless of my opinion, the transfer is ultra slow. The express adapter is really fast, about a 2 gigs a minute. The 5 slot p2 drive is good too.
as far as desk tops go, you can get a PCI-x card that accepts a single pcmcia card and that is 32 bit, for $20 - $40
