Red Mini has a name - Scarlet

The name is... - Reduser.netJim Jannard, founder of Red, put up a post entitled "The Name Is..."

"Scarlet. Our Pocket Professional camera.

We know that the name has leaked out, so we want to avoid any postings and speculation.

Prototypes will be shown at NAB. It is not a competitor or replacement for the RED ONE.

Jim"

Recap of facts- professional pocket camera.

SPECULATION: if pocket sized, and not a replacement for Red One, then likely lower cost, lower resolution, lesser feature set. So maybe 2K/1080p, solid state recording only? Hopefully variable frame rates? To me the price point/feature set balance will be interesting to see - obviously should cost less than the Red One, but how much less? $15K wouldn't make sense, even with lens (and is it fixed or interchangeable lenses? If interchangeable, what mount that would still allow it to be "pocket" sized?) Roughly $10K (or less) would suddenly put it in competition with the rest of the sub-$10K cameras...and hmm, doesn't THAT get interesting for low budget indies and docmakers etc.?

After working with red-one, you realize it's not for everyone... Hard to justify the cost of Red-One (or those sweet sweet lenses) for online work, SD work, or no-budget docs or youtube.

Scarlet could be the rest of us. Please let it be cheap redcode 2k/1080p that records on compact flash memory (or superfast SD?).

based on an analysis, it's estimated that the RED one can be manufactured for about $2000. The real question about scarlet is what type of lens will it use. Cine lenses would be stupid (who would fork over $5k for a camera, and then $20k for a set of lenses?) but cine lenses are what seperates RED from prosumer camcorders.

Another question is weather they are targeting the prosumer HD market (HVX crowd) or high-end consumer (pocket HD for kid's soccer game).

Also, when discussing scarlet, many wish for 4K. This is stupid, as dealing with 4K costs another $5-10k in post workflow. If you had that money, you would invest it in a ONE.

SoccerCam people are looking for HandyCams.. RED has no reason to step into that. My guess is it'll be a really badass fixed-lens, designed to smoke the HVX and that new EX1. Target: Sub $6000, but not 2K. No value in 2K without interchangeable lenses. Jim et al will have to put a wide enough margin between REDONE and Scarlet.

Believe what I say for I am Jim Schilowitz. Brother of the son in law of Ted Jannard.

Sub $6k with a fixed lens as a competitor to the HVX would be my guess too.

And you wouldn't even need 2K. 99% of the target market would be happy with quality 720/24p. Deliriously happy with 1080/60p.

As for recording, then I myself would bet on some sort of hard drive based recording. Quite possibly a large internal hard drive that can be swapped out if need be.

I'll put my official guess at a competitor for the HVX. I do think Jim is thinking to take over the highest end consumer market. I think Jim thinks in large large numbers and absolutely thinks of RED becoming another multi bllion dollar company. So, I think he is thinking in tens of thousands of sales and he is very mindful of establishing a "sony" like brand name with RED.

I also think he likes to smear the competition.

The big question for me is 4k or 2k. I think he really believes in 4k as a useable resolution for everyone. And eventhough it would make sense to have it be a 2k camera - i think he might want to have the 4k depth of field... also - what if you had tens of thousands of orders of your sensor - wouldn't that make it cheaper?

Anyway - I'll put my guess in at something at HD 1080 or more and sub $5000 in cost.

Unknown Filmmaker - 4K for $17,500 was a radical breakthrough - how could they do it for a lot less than they already are? They've said it isn't a competitor for Red One. The depth of field comes from the sensor size, not the resolution of the chip. A 35mm sized sensor requires 35mm sized glass - not pocketable most likely.

Everyone - we need to separate our wishes from what is likely.

HVX is no longer the top target, IMHO - the EX1 is. The only real advantages the HVX offers are the variable framerates and offspeeds, and the subjective benefit of how the footage's color looks (I like Panasonic's color choices).

1080p with 720p downconvert (perhaps in software?) options.

Bet your ass it'll be Final Cut Pro compatible.

If it will shoot slow motion (without having to fake it with frame interpolation in post) even for a few seconds ala sony's smooth slow motion feature, I'll buy it in a heartbeat.
