Blogwad! - CES & more FreshDV EX1 coverage, & more
Canon Debuts First High Definition Solid State Camcorders: HF10 and HF100 - Canon
Sony Offers a Single HDV Model for 2008 - HDR-HC9 - Sony: "Sony has announced that they will release only one model in HDV category, the HDR-HC9, at least for early 2008. This decision only confirms the generally recognized fact that the tape-based HDV format has fallen out of favor compared to DVD, hard disk drive (HDD), and flash memory media using the newer AVCHD recording format." Retails for $1099. Even though this is a consumer camera, they are recognizing that HDV is/was a transitional technology.
Move Over HV20, Here Comes the Canon HV30 - Canon: "oday at CES, Canon announced the Vixia HV30 ($999 MSRP), the replacement for the popular HV20. The new HDV camcorder features an all-black design, a multi-angle Vivid LCD screen, and the ability to capture in 30P mode. Canon now offers a total of five camcorders in their newly christened “Vixia” high definition line-up.
“With the exception of those features, the product is the same as the HV20. Is it a revolutionary product? No."

XDCAM EX1 Hands-On - Picture Profiles and Image Settings at FreshDV Video walkthrough of the menus. Good stuff if you want to see the nitty gritty.
MORE ADDED HERE: XDCAM EX1 Hands-On - Night Footage Compression Examples at FreshDV: "One of the areas that the new Sony XDCAM PMW-EX1 really excels is in native light sensitivity. Night shooting with the EX is relatively simple, as the camera seems to find illumination and color saturation in even the darkest of scenes. Here are a few examples of night footage shot with the EX1, including a 60p overcranked shot."
Wired News - AP News - netflix is going to offer a set-top box that'll download movies. thousands of titles available, vs. nearly 100,000 titles available on DVD. Devil in the details....will indie content be made available via this system?

The rumor sites are buzzing that new Macs are due at MacWorld - Penryn processors and Blu-ray for desktops, and an ultraslim/small laptop. I won't deign to let the rumormongers get traffic from here based on those rumors - it is their JOB to promote rumors, most often inaccurate, that simply drive traffic...and revenue. Here's what I think is likely:
-Penryn processors: they came out in November, so why NOT finally now? Newly optimized compilers could help get best results.
-high def optical discs in towers: Apple has been on the Blu-ray board since what, 2005? When Jobs got up on stage and announced, with then honcho of Sony, that Apple would support Blu-ray. Well, 3 years later, they...MIGHT. Blu-ray SEEMS to be stepping into the lead - Blu-ray disc sales surpass HD DVD substantially, even though the players cost more. BUT...Apple would have some homework to do. One of the rumor sites reported that Apple would have to rename DVD Studio Pro to Disc Studio Pro. Hardly. Currently, you can author an HD DVD formatted volume and burn it to a traditional DVD+/-R, either single or dual layer. Blu-ray is not presently supported - we'd need an updated DVD Studio Pro to support Blu-ray. SOOOOO.....if Apple has been supporting HD DVD (albeit in a limited capacity) - why would they completely shift gears? This bodes for the possiblity that they may offer a combo (does both) or two separate optical drives - get one or both HD formats. Remember, the Mac Pros have two optical bays - why else offer them if you aren't going to have two optical drives?
-Apple typically updates DVD Studio Pro with the rest of Final Cut Studio at NAB - in April. And HD optical support is really a pro video feature at this point in time...not a consumer feature, which MWSF is all about (consumer stuff, that is). So maybe optical drive updates will wait for NAB, unless Apple drops a surprise DVD Studio udpate on us. Doubt it. I'm thinking Penryn based boxes announced at MWSF, but perhaps a wait until NAB for HD optical drives and the software to take advantage of them. Unless we get a Blu-ray burner and can just use it for data backups in the meantime...or HD DVD and we can make HD DVDs now.
Much to think about.
As to rumors of an AppleTV 2.0....be nice, but dunno. A TV tuner, better HD support, and bigger hard drives would make it a more viable choice. As well as an optical drive to make it be a less limiting device...but that wouldn't be Apple's way. They did away with floppies and went all-USB early on - they tend to not look back.

David Lynch on movie watching on iPhone (HARSH language included):
....spoken like a traditionalist. If you believe "watching a movie" is best in a theater, next best on a good home theater system, and doesn't count on a mobile device, then sure, he's right.
But I watch Lost episodes on iPhone and don't feel shortchanged - I got what I wanted out of it.
---------
BTW - if Apple has to PAY damn near retail for movies for downloads, can they at least release them in HD as well at that price????

Mike's running commentary
If I had time I could probably write an entire article on the supposition that perhaps the inclusion of H.264 in Adobe's Flash player is a quid pro quo for Apple to add Flash support into the iPhone. Maybe.
Aluminum iMacs - not a bad machine. I'd love to run my FCP test suite on it to see how it holds up. As an offline edit box that lacks true video out - not bad. With 1TB FW800 drives available....
Color - does lots.Workflow still tricky in places, not as easy or perfect. But improving.
HD DVD switch - maybe it isn't just the money as rumored - he puts out a not bad line of reasoning. But he ducks with the whole 'we don't talk money' line of thought as to whether they were paid to dump blu-ray. Even with all his reasoning, are you seriously telling me they'll make money by supporting fewer formats? There's pros and cons to both formats - Blu-ray may scratch easier, HD DVD holds less but costs less. Blu-ray interactivity does lots but hard to program, HD DVD interactivity simpler but easier to program. HD DVD has stabler spec with required connectivity, Blu-ray...doesn't and doesn't and is still a moving target.
I really don't care as much which one wins now (since I have both players, and Final Cut Studio 2 supports HD DVD and Adobe Creative Suite 3 supports Blu-ray on Intel Macs), I just want a clear winner sooner rather than later. And this move delays a clear winner, as Blu-ray seemed to be gaining the lead with 2:1 sales advantage of late on media (content not blanks) sales.
-mike, and thanks again to Andy Nelson who has been helping me all summer and is returning to school starting next week. And to my other intern Geoffrey Frost who wrapped up last week and will be renting out his HVX200 and Brevis 35mm adaptor in Austin soon.

HD for Indies Updated Articles

Blogwad! for Wednesday, July 11, 2007
I'd like to do these every Friday, but sometimes they slip, especially when life gets crazy busy. So this took until Wednesday - so be it. We'll put together a shorty on Friday and hopefully keep it on schedule thereafter. A new feature of the Blogwad! is a list of articles from HD for Indies that I've updated since they were originally posted. I often write essentially a first-and-a-half type draft and spasticly slam "Post" and within minutes or hours go back and fix the most obvious errors of frothy-blogging syndrome, but I also very often go back and substantially amend, correct, and/or add to prior articles just to have it all tidily in my own place. Unfortunately, unless you go back and check everything, you'd never know.
So at the end of each week there will now be a list in the Blogwad! (yes I like putting it that way) of updated HD4NDs articles so you'll at least KNOW you're missing something good. ; )
Let us begin with a really great chunk of info Michael Horton and crew have put together for our benefit:
Sixth Annual FCP Supermeet
The Sixth Annual FCPUG SuperMeet (Podcast) - 9 Podcasts covering Slow Motion Music Videos, the Red One, Blackmagic Design, and more. LOTS OF GOOD STUFF IN HERE! This would normally be its own post, but I've had some chaos to deal with. Spend an hour or two watching, learn LOTS. Here are links to each and a brief description, thanks (as usual) to Andy for putting these links together, it does take time.
1. - Building the SuperMeet Magazine and Introduction of FCP UG Leaders - Daniel Berube and Michael Horton discuss producing the SuperMeet, building the SuperMeet Magazine and then take you directly to the Palazzo Ballroom for the introduction of FCP User Group leaders from around the world. Some good fun and gives you a taste of what the SuperMeet is all about.
2. - SmartSound Sonicfire Pro 4.5 - Michael Horton welcomes everyone to the SuperMeet and then hands over the mic to Stephanie Joyce of SmartSound who shows off the features of the music scoring app, Sonicfire Pro 4.5 with "Smart Recall" and "Mood Mapping."
3. - JVC GYHD 200 and Slow Motion Music Videos - Craig Yanagi, National Marketing Manager for JVC Professional Cameras, shows off the JVC GYHD 200 with all the bells and whistles attached. Then Craig introduces DP and editor Tim Dashwood of Toronto Canada who shows us how he easily synched the audio for a slow motion (60P) music video he shot using the GYHD 200. Also includes how to use your iPod as a timecode slate.
4. - Red Digital Cinema Camera and the Red Team - Leader of the Rebellion" Ted Schilowitz introduces the Red One Digital Cinema Camera, introduces members of the Red team, announces the Red Pocket camera and discusses workflow with Final Cut Pro.
5. - Sony XDCAM EX, FirmTek, OurStage.com, Automatic Duck, Quantum, and that SuperMeet Feeling - Filmmaker Rick Young of macvideo.TV talks to Sony UK Marketing Manager Carl Pring about the Sony XDCAM EX on the show floor at NAB. Then moves a few city blocks down the show floor to FirmTek where we learn about their storage and host adapter solutions. We then run back to the SuperMeet where Rick talks to OurStage.com, Automatic Duck, Quantum, and then takes you on a tour of the very crowded lobby where over 27 SuperMeet sponsors showed off their toys to the enthusiastic crowd.
Mike's Comments on XDCAM EX: XDCAM EX looks REALLY promising. With fast Macs and FCP 6's ability to transcode long GOP content automatically to ProRes for rendered content (cross dissolves, titled footage, color correction, Motion tabbed, etc.), the editing hindrances of HDV (which is kissing cousin to XDCAM HD, which is a sibling to XDCAM EX just written to different physical media AFAIK) are fading pretty fast. XDCAM EX (I think I heard) is stated (??) to do 35 megabit VBR MPEG-2, which with a full raster 1/2" 1920x1080 imager/s ought to look pretty damn good (so long as the in-camera motion isn't moving at Michael Bay on 6th cappuccino type speeds). BUT....Apple has to support the format first. Actually, Sony has to ship the cameras first, stated to be late/r this year. So here's to hoping by next NAB at the LATEST we'll see an announcement of support and working FCP (7? They grow up so fast, sniff....) for this exciting and promising new format. With the "render back" quality issue addressed in FCP 6, and especially at the $8000 price point and MUCH MUCH MUCH more afforable media, this should be a SERIOUS threat to Panasonic's P2 format and the much beloved HVX200 camera (I belove the HVX's extreme shooting frame rate/size flexibility and color reproduction and P2 workflow, I not-so-belove the P2 media's price point, even after the recent drop).
6. - Blackmagic Design - President of Blackmagic Design, Dan May introduces the Multibridge Eclipse, the Intensity Pro Card and answers the question "What Blackmagic product do I need when working with what media?" He is joined by Philip Hodgetts of the Digital Production Buzz.
7. - Walter Murch Pt. 1 - Sound Mixer and Film Editor Walter Murch takes us through the Post Production Workflow on Francis Coppola's movie Youth Without Youth, defines "Editing," talks about the beginning of his career with Francis Coppola and how he came to use Final Cut Pro. Part 1 of 3 parts.
8. - Walter Murch Pt. 2 - Mr Murch continues our tour of the Post Production process on Youth Without Youth. In this Part 2, he shows us his cutting room in San Francisco, his workstation and how he edits. He discusses the "writing" aspect of editing and reducing the first assembly. We also get to see a bit of his Editing Suite in a "decayed Villa" in Bucharest, where Youth Without Youth was filmed.
9. - Walter Murch Pt. 3 - We move to Bucharest, Romania where the music was recorded, sound fx recording and cutting begins and a three day re-shoot. We then move to the final stages of the movie at Francis Coppola's winery in Napa Valley which doubles as a mixing stage. Walter then takes us on a tour of the human brain where he attempts to answer the question, "Why on earth do we do what we do?" We wrap up with a few questions from the audience.

Look, I'm not saying wait for version 2.0. You don't need new hardware to love the phone; version 1.1 should do it. Wait until Apple updates the software. That was a hard to write, since I'm thumbing through my own iPhone like a teenager with his first Playboy. " Nicely apt metaphor. : ) -mike
Intern Andy Nelson organizes the blogwad from all the stray links of the week and adds his own appropriately pithy/snarky summaries, I pester and organize/edit over his shoulder. Thanks Andy!
I'd also like to say thanks to Geoff Frost, the other intern, whose contributions are not as obviously visible on the blog except for his recent HVX workflow article he wrote and I added onto in my usual pestery form.

SoftRAID 3.6 doesn't work under 10.4.10 - so don't upgrade yet!:
"SoftRaid 3.6 does not recognize 10.4.10, and will not allow access to preferences for changes or statistics. The only option is to close the software. To paraphrase the error message, it says that I don't have the proper OS installed and that I should install 10.4.X.
I sent an inquiry to SoftRaid, LLC about this and I received an answer back in under 5 minutes as follows:
'Either go back to 10.4.9, wait until 3.6.2 is out, or ask to be on the beta list for 3.6.2. This is caused by Apples hack to make a 10.4.10 possible, which violates their naming standards.'"

Apple - iPhone - A Guided Tour - new on Apple's site.
EDIT 9:45PM - I'm watching this right now on my HDTV via my AppleTV (the file is Apple TV compatible, natch). My garage got burgled today - my trusty mountain bike (Bridgestone MB-1, heavily modified over last 16 years) got stolen, and my car pilfered. Drat it - so much for my comfy neighborhood vibe - alarm to be used EVERY time I leave the house from now on. But anyway, feel better sitting home tonight and locking all the windows, etc. Back on topic - the iPhone has more little features I hadn't noticed before, so that's good. A silent ringer dedicated button. Speaker and microphone both on bottom (odd!). Another speaker up by your ear. Sleep/wake button is nice - can still receive calls and listen to music, but the big screen is off to save battery. The speaker on the bottom is for speakerphone mode - nice! Conference calling is nice and easy - I could never figure it out on any other phone system before without going to the manual. Lots of subtle quality UI touches. The cost is starting to not matter as much seeing all this - this is how it ought to work. If they released a phone with no video, no audio, and just the UI in a smaller form factor..it'd sell just fine. can surf multiple simultaneous pages - keep'em open. Email on iPhone can read/view JPEG, PDF, Word, Excel, RTF, HTML, etc. The keyboard is "smart" they say as it catches typos, etc. They suggest starting with your index finger and then advancing to thumbing - "in about a week you'll be typing faster on the iPhone than on any other phone" - so get ready for a learning curve. Still only being demo'd in vertical keyboard only mode - I've always been wondering when they'd get a wide mode keyboard mode - I have fat thumbs (and all that...oh never mind). Stock widget is exactly like the OS X widget. Google Maps - it doesn't seem to be self-aware of where you are as some has hoped - you have to tell it where you are. Traffic updates can be live - nice! YouTube - yeah, gotta be on WiFi from what they seem to be saying. Has an airplane mode - no WiFi, Bluetooth, or cell signals come out of it in this mode (well thought out!). Set your ringtone - they don't mention loading your own, but part of me wants to use this one (NSFW).
Whew!
That'll hold us for a bit...
